joining me now, boyd matheson, former chief of staff, mike lee, and john summers, former communicationspy 2019, we are almost there. it has been a busy week over the holidays, not a quiet one for politics coming here we are in the cusp of 2019 running up to 2020 getting underway with this initial announcement from senator warren, and you surprised that she is throwing her hat in the ring? why get out ahead of the crowd at this point in time? >> yes, she does get first mover status which is an important thing for her. because she can say that she did not wait around to see who was getting in and out, and she can say that i have a vision and i can move forward. if so she does get bonus points there. all of the senators, and you have to throw bernie sanders in there is a another potential, all of them should remember that history has not been kind to sitting senators. there is only been three who have moved directly from the senate to the white house, barack obama, kennedy, and then hurting which i do not think that anybody remembers. so they have an uphill battle, a good news let mack mov

here to break it all down, democratic strategist basil smikle, boyd matheson, former chief of staff, former senator mikemack. tim, let's talk about mick mulvaney. what kind of chief of staff do we expect him to be? >> he'll be acquainted with how capitol hill is run. he'll be an interesting liaison to watch between the new democratically controlled house and the white house, to see if they can work out a deal in the new year to get the government running again. >> we also want to talk about him being omb director. he still has a job. boyd, if he has to prioritize one office over the other, which do you think for him is going to take priority? >> that's -- i mean, that is tough. those are both very tough jobs and the job of chief of staff is just never ending minutia. i do think it's a good thing that it's the first time the president has someone in the chief of staff role who really is a policy guy. and i think that will be an important thing rolling into the back half, but that splitting of time and splitting of focus is different. focus always preceding success in any political office or operation. mi

. >> anita: let's bring in our panel john summers and boyd matson former chief of staff for senator mikeme to you both and thank you for joining us on this christmas eve. >> merry christmas thanks for having me. >> merry christmas. >> anita: john, let me start with you. you go back. you may remember me blowing up your email in 2010 trying to convince to you get harry reid to sit down with us and you made that happen he was willing to make a compromise. is that's what's missing right now we need compromise? >> i think you hit the nail on the head there. harry reid is a classic example of a master dealmaker in washington. we are seeing fewer and fewer of those types of folks here in d.c. the problem what we are seeing now is that this is all about donald trump. this isn't about him doing what's best for the country. he actually made the decision to do what's best for the country by trying to avoid a government shut down he blinked because he started getting extreme criticism from voices in his party and that's what he decided to shut down. as we seen already and trump already this morning
