mike brooks said lax held an active shooter drill recently. >> they did.hree weeks ago in ontario airport, 30 miles from lax, 300 officers taking part in an active shooter scenario like this and the l.a. police chief said a lot of the officers who responded today said the training like that helped them to respond well to this incident, helps save lives, and it just shows you that they are conscious of this threat there. lax is a target of attacks before. al qaeda targeted it in 200, 2002 there was a shooting at the desk there. all americans airports you can argue are targets, lax a target for a spectacular attack like this. they prepare for it but, you know, you can only do so much there are always weak points and you can't stop ever attack. >> yeah, and there is obviously still a lot we're trying to learn exactly what happened today and how the shooter got so deep. appreciate it. lets look at the bigger picture. tom ridge was the nation's first secretary of homeland security. appreciate you joining us. this was the first time a tsa officer has been killed

mike brooks is joining us on the phone. we are here with kevin flanagan who is with ride and security investigations. mike, in terms of this operation, this is a huge mall. i was just looking up the stats. 311 different retailers inside this mall. over 2 million square feet of retail space. 10,774 parking spaces. this is a huge area for law enforcement to try to cover. >> is it. and one of the key things right now is the law enforcement who have -- i know they most likely have trained on this mall before for an active shooter. most law enforcement agencies do. but the main thing right now is to try to get the surveillance video of what happened inside. even though someone's shooting at the cameras, that doesn't make any difference, law enforcement will have surveillance video of what happened inside and try to put together a time line, where the shooter, if he or she was by themselves, where they came in, exactly what their movement was. we heard someone say they found one shell casing from a rifle. okay. that's fine, but wh

let's dig a little bit deeper right now with hln law enforcement analyst, mike brooks, who's joining us right now. you served, what, 26 years on the d.c. police force, mike. what's going on here? did this guy get off light? is this usual -- business as usual? what do you make of this? >> well, wolf, he bought 3.5 grams. on the street, they call that an eight-ball, because it's an eighth of an ounce of cocaine. so it's for personal use if he had bought more, he could have been charged with possession with intent to distribute, which would have been a felony, and probably would have got an harsher sentence. but with the court docket the way it is in d.c. superior court, wolf, a year's probation is, i would say the norm in washington, d.c. especially like for a first offense like this congressman has of simple possession of cocaine. >> if he weren't a congressman, day didn't know he was a congressman, would he have been busted to begin with in that sting operation? >> absolutely. if you look at the court papers, it says this was part of an ongoing investigation on drug trafficking in the

i want to bring in hln law enforcement analyst mike brooks.earning bits and pieces here, not a lot right now. they were found in a private home in oklahoma. it was all because of a tip that came into authorities this morning. they were taken without incident. >> well, the first two were caught less than 20 miles from the prison. they didn't get far at all. these two, we're not sure exactly how far from the jail they were caught. again, it came from a tip. you know, when you have escapees, they're going to go to either family, friends, associates. you know, it wasn't a matter of if, it was a matter of when. i knew they were going to get caught. i'm glad to see they were caught from a tip. >> what happens in cases like this? you have to know police are thinking, okay, what's familiar territory for them? let's each out to family, let's reach out to associates to see if they have made contact. now, don't they know that the police are going to do that and that's just not smart? but i suppose breaking out of jail isn't smart. >> not too bright eithe

let's discuss what is going on with mike durant of the brookings institution, and marie slaughter, the former director of policy planning at the state department. ann marie, you think this deal is a good step forward, but what about the concept skepticism in washington and abroad that iran simply cannot be trusted? >> well, wolf, the first thing to say is, it is not a final deal. it is an interim agreement that gives us six months of breathing space, where iran -- its nuclear program is halted and indeed, actually pushed back a little to give us time to see if we can get to a final conclusion. and i think you have to understand it against the back drop of three basic options. i mean, either we do nothing and iran continues to move toward a nuclear weapon, or we get a verifiable agreement that actually stops that progress, or there is a military strike against iran. so against that back drop, this seems to me, a real step forward. >> yeah, and you're familiar with the fact that the state department to this day considers iran a state sponsor of terrorism. but we now know over the past ye
