let's talk more about mike dewine, the ohio attorney general. what does he hope to find? >> well, he wants to make sure that as he put it yesterday in the press conference after this verdict came down here steubenville that every stone is overturned and nothing is left uncovered in this. the ohio attorney general's office prosecuted it successfully. it is a concern because 16 people that they tried to interview in this investigation leading up to the trial refused to talk to them. so by convening this grand jury in mid april, they said indictments could be filed, charges could be made, or they may not. but they want to make sure they at least go through the process fully here in the community. in terms of what they're looking for, he wouldn't name specifically, but he did mention possibly tampering with evidence, you know, that cell phone video that was taken testified to being taken of the rape, that was deleted. so possibly tampering with evidence. other charges. he said there is no limit to what the ohio attorney general's office will look at in this, carol. >> not ove

. >> the ohio attorney general, mike dewine, has already asked that a grand jury be convened on april 15th. could it be that more charges are coming for those, at least 15 who may have witnessed this crime? >> absolutely. it is just like a modern day "witness," that movie. when you look at people that either egged in on, that said in some way they encouraged things at the time or tried to cover up after the fact, or before the fact, you have all kinds of conspiracy, potential charges, aiding and abetting, and things of that nature. the grand jury needs to be involved in this because people are cooperating. >> it was extraordinary watching this in juvenile court. maybe it happens all the time, but to see family members coming to the defense of the defendants in a very passionate, emotional way that she wau play out this morning, quite extraordinary. is this fairly typical or was this a unique setting? >> it is typical. i was a prosecutor in juvenile court for a long time. i even had a federal grant for violent and habitual juvenile offenders. parent, they love their kids but they may b

i want you to listen once again very closely to what the ohio attorney general, mike dewine, said rightfter those verdicts were reached. >> rape is not a recreational activity. we as a society have an obligation to do more to educate our young people about rape. they need to know it is a horrible crime of violence. it simply is not okay. >> and then there's the social media aspect of it all. prosecutors admitted that without those texts and those awful cell phone pictures they really didn't have much of a case. judge hatchet presided over one of the juvenile court systems in the country in atlanta before becoming a television judge and kathryn redmond is founder of the national coalition against violent athletes. judge hatchet, i thought of you immediately when i heard these verdicts and when i saw those kids and when i heard the reaction from the victim's mom and i wondered because this was so powerful and there was so much coverage on tv and social media, will this be the wake-up call that's needed for young people, many of whom you've seen come through your courtroom? >> absolutely.

additionally, ohio's attorney mike dewine held a press conference where he said that a grand jury wille convened here to determine whether or not others committed crimes in this incident. don? >> poppy, thank you very much. as you heard poppy say, the state's highest legal authority says this trial maybe over, but he's not finished with the case. the ohio attorney general wants to convene a grand jury, and he wants more people to answer for what they know. listen. >> there seems to be an unbelievable casualness about rape and about sex. it's a cavalier attitude, a belief that somehow there isn't anything wrong with any of this. rape is not a recreational activity. we cannot bring finality to this without the convening of a grand jury. this community also desperately needs to know that justice was done and desperately needs to know that no stone was left unturned. >> we'll talk more about this now. paul callan is with me, a cnn legal analyst in new york. paul, you heard from the state attorney general there. you are -- you're familiar with the steubenville rape case. can the attorney ge

. >>> mike dewine is the attorney general of ohio., good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let's start with these new charges. are you trying to send a message? >> you know, the victim continues to be victimized. she has been victimized by the act itself. she's had to go through the court proceeding, but it's been horrible for her family to look at these things that have been posted, and so freedom of speech is fine, first amendment is wonderful, but these two individuals crossed the line. you cannot under ohio law threaten to kill someone. >> let me ask you this -- >> we're not going to tolerate it, and we're not going to put up with it. >> the defense attorney for one of these young women said in fact she does not know the victim and did not send the message to her and she says prosecutors have overcharged here because of the scrutiny. your response to that? >> my response is we're sick and tired of the victim being victimized. we have to protect the victim. we're going to take whatever action it takes to protect this young lady.

and that is why attorney general mike dewine wants to convene a grand jury to compel these people to others need to be charged. dewine is clear he wants to send a message with this case. >> what's even more shocking and appalling is a crimes of sexual assault are occurring every friday night, every sat day night, across this country. >> reporter: dewine is not anticipating serious charges. he is predicting low level misdemeanors, things like failure to report a crime. martha? martha: very dramatic in the courtroom over the weekend but we have not known really how the victim is doing, mike. is there any information on that today? >> reporter: a relative tells me she spend a lot of time in her room. she has been back out playing sports the through it all you will be surprised to learn she made the honor roll one more time. a family representative says the remorse coming from the football players came too late. we saw their reaction yesterday. >> would truly like to apologize to her family and my family and the community. no pictures should have been sent around. no photos taken. thank
