governor mike dewine joins us now. it's good to see you. i'm sorry it's under these circumstances.ave this platform to make your case for what's happening and what you believe will happen. why do you think the state has taken a downturn? >> well, i think, you know, summer is here. people are out, people are moving around. chris, i don't think there's any secret about what is going on across this country. and, you know, when we had people staying home, they didn't have as much contact. i spent some time on the phone talking to different health directors in the different counties, i called all seven counties the other day. i said, what's causing this? the answer is, look, people are out. these are sometimes big family events occurring, sometimes a wedding, sometimes a funeral. sometimes they're going to a bar. you know, all kinds of things. some of that is, of course, an institution such as a nursing home. but the majority of it is not. most of it is community spread, people are moving around. and our message continues to be the same, this is a mask that fran made, an ohio mask here.

let's discuss with governor mike dewine. thanks so much for joining us. why are cases declining and what steps are you taking to change that trajectory. >> well, we're at a trajectory time. the numbers are like this as far as the case numbers. they've reached somewhat of a plateau. our positivity number that we look at all the time is actually slightly down. we're happy about that. one of our earliest earliest indicators are people going to the emergency room with covid-19 symptoms. has been going down now for about a week. so we're still at a very, very -- you know, this thing could go either way in ohio. we've now had a statewide mask order. what we're seeing is the mask compliance, people wearing masks in the urban areas. it's up substantially. we've been doing this in our reddest counties, so to speak, for three weeks, three and a half weeks, and we've seen the number of people wearing masks up, and we've seen those numbers stabilize. what we've also seen, though, wolf, in the rural areas, we're seeing this spread go out further. we do a four-tier, an

joining us now to discuss is republican governor mike dewine of ohio.ernor dewine, thanks for joining us. so you have a new statewide mask mandate now in place. it requires masks at indoor locations and outside if there's no social distancing as well as on public transportation. as you well know, cases have been rising in ohio for the last month. why implement this now and not earlier? >> well, we started about four weeks ago a process where we labeled counties by different levels. and if you were a red level, which was three, people had to wear a mask. so we've been kind of easing people into this. but the good news is that we've seen the mask wearing go up. when we look at some of these counties where they've been wearing masks more, we think we're seeing a slowdown, at least a slowdown in the increase. so, our numbers have gone up today or yesterday was the second highest that we've had for some time. so we don't like that at all. but we've been hovering somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 every day now for two weeks probably. >> 12 or 1,500 new cases?

mike dewine here in ohio who did a good job, by the way, initially in the way he reacted to the pandemic but he rushed to reopen and we are seeing the cost now, the spike is happening here. he rushed to reopen and said okay, everyone back to work before they had a child care plan. what does that say to women who are having to make this impossible choice between working and their kids. i think that the long-term we have to do -- the public side has to do a much better job of thinking through all the public support systems that support families and working women, single women, before we say to them, go back to work and start doing this again. this has to be much more of a worker driven bottom-up driven mindset as to how to safely reopen then it has been where it's been from the top down and i think that is but people, women, families, working families, workers in general and a very tough position and we are seeing it now on the school's reopening. the school reopening is being pushed from the top without any conversation with teachers and staff of schools about how you could actually do it
