hoping to unseat mike enzi. in her campaign announcement, cheney says the country needs a new generation of leaders to step up to the plate. senator enzi say, wait a minute. he thinks voters in wim willing eventually stick with him. our chief congressional correspondent dana bash caught up with mike enzi on capitol hill. what did he have to say about liz cheney's challenge. >>> the idea of liz cheney running for senate is a big deal, last name cheney, one of dick cheney's daughters and challenging a fellow republican and somebody who is a longtime family friend. mike enzi might not have national name recognition, but he's somebody who is well known in the state where she's running in wyoming. he was quoted, mike enzi, as telling some reporters, yesterday when the news broke, that i thought we were friends. when i caught up with him today after a health care committee meeting i asked him about that and a few other things. why do you think that she believes that you aren't doing a good enough job as a republican s

why do you think mike enzi should be re-elected and renominated over cheney? ike has a strong solid conservative record of get things done for the people of wyoming. he is my friend. he is my mentor. i think he does a great job of representing wyoming in the senate and i'll support him for re-election. >> did liz cheney reach out to you and ask for your advice? >> i talked to her a couple months ago but i haven't talked to her recently. >> do you think that there is a place in wyoming politics for liz cheney? >> i have great respect for the cheney family, for the vice president, for lynne and for liz. i think that she's terrific and she has a future that is very, very bright. i just think this is the wrong race at the wrong time. >> and her chief contention against senator enzi appears to be that he's not confrontational enough or not willing to -- is willing to sit down with others too much. is that something that's going to be a punishable offense in wyoming politics these days? >> the election isn't going to be for another 13 months. this is all going to com

"abc news" reported that enzi was assured by liz cheney that if he were to run she would not challenge him. and then this happens. what do you make of this, and how much could it hurt the republicans. >> it's such a safe seat i don't think it will have a big impact over what party controls that seat. but within the party perspective this is an interesting move. the cheneys had moves from the washington area back to wyoming, they're looked at as home staters. they're not carpet baggers but they haven't been there for a long time. they're just getting to know the state. and to take on mike enzi who is very well liked in the state who has been known for his service might be a little bit too big. her daughter father is dick cheney, so this will be interesting to watch. how badly does liz cheney want to beat up a mainstream republican. it really raises the question of what will mike enzi do? how badly does he want to hit back against liz cheney because he has kept his powder dry up until no

what is mike enzi's reputation on the hill? he's been a conservative voice. he hasn't taken any nonconservative votes that would be easy for her to attack? >> it doesn't appear to be an ideological path to take. he's a gentleman in the truest sense. i spoke to him off the senate floor where there aren't cameras. he said he thought she was his friend. i got a sense of almost a personal deflation being hurt that she would get into the race. i asked if she contacted him before her announcement. he said, no. in fact, he said when they last spoke she assured him if he chose to run she would not get in the race. the former vice president he expects will support his daughter but he has been a long-time friend. he would not say anything critical about her. i picked up a deft zinger. voters there don't want long primary campaigns. this is something where you don't file until next may. he said somebody who's from wyoming should know that. one of the issues with liz cheney is she spent so much of her professional life in washington, d.c., area. >> and this is part of th

cheney doesn't have the charisma that says more about liz cheney than mike enzi. >> mike enzi has a big. i think there is an opening here because the fact that fame plays such a big role in our politics. the same reason cory booker will not run again which is what booker was going to win that primary if he ran against lautenberg and cheney has that same kind of fame. the challenge here being she does have to speak to why is she running for the senate. i think it's critical here. why, if you look at virginia where she used to live and she'd probably have to win 1 million votes to be a senator and to win the primary in election, the republican primary, 50,000 votes. there is a clear cut argument right now for enzi to make that you just showed up here because it's easier for you to get to the senate. room for her to win, but she has to do more than what she's doing now and she has no message and she's not really contrasted in any strong way and she's not like cory booker. she's not rescuing people from their homes. she's got to do something with the cheney name and also doesn't have the ra

mike enzi still has a lot of friends left. >> we've only seen the two polls, one from a republican firm democratic firm. both have enzi about 25 points over cheney. he's over the 50% mark. i think you know, one of the things that republicans said when she announced her campaign is she was really going to have to work pretty hard to convince people that there was a firing offense here for enzi. that maybe maybe liz cheney has an appeal of her own. what is wrong with mike enzi if you're a conservative. i think the polls bear that out. >> bill: isn't the real question, i guess whether people want a workhorse or a show horse. somebody who will work for people of wyoming or running for president? >> i think that's certainly mike enzi. writing his campaign message. the cheney view is do you want somebody who is going to be a workhorse or somebody who is going to be a conservative activist? and i think it is up for question in wyoming. the western states that are big geographically, small in terms of population, they have a history of electing people as we do focus on delivering for the state

mike enzi, a senator, the one who's incumbent and feels betrayed that cheney is running, is consideredconservative by standards. it will be interesting to see if that works there and other places where there's going to be primaries in the gop. >>> switching gears to the voter rights act. do you think that the partisan divides in congress are too deep to reach agreement on this issue quickly and efficiently? >> yes, i do. as a matter of fact, there's a real divide. in a general sense, the democrats would like to reinstate some version of it and the republicans would not. part of the strategy seems to be to try to discourage minority voting. it's going to be very difficult to come to an accommodation. >> turning quickly to immigration, as it works its way to the house, marco rubio seems to have gone completely quiet on the topic. has it turned into a liebt with conservatives? >> it could. it could for mario rubio if he's going to run for president. many people in people's eyes the gop has become the h.o.p., the hateful old party. >>> coming up, bill karins and betty nguyen will be here f

in fact, it's the one thing about liz cheney's challenge in wyoming to mike enzi that it reminds us of. he's the only republican incumbent now who has a serious intraparty challenge on his hands. lindsey graham whose conservative credentials were supposed to be challenged in south carolina doesn't seem to have a primary opponent. at least not one yet. there's still a filing deadline in a few months. neither does minority leader mitch mcconnell. texas senator john cornyn, nope. lee mar alexander, not happening. a year ago, who would have thought out of all those gop senate incumbents we just mentioned, it would be enzi being the only one so far facing a real primary fight. well, it's going to be a ducey. a fun one to watch. yesterday inp with well liz cheney made her primary challenge to enzi official. calling for, quote, a new generation of conservative leaders in washington. >> if we're passive, if we fail to take up this fight, if we fail to defend our nation against these destructive policies, our very freedoms will be at risk. >> cheney denies that she ever promised enzi she would
