mike hellgren has the very latest from the scene, mike we're having difficult with mark hellgren's signal. and we'll get back to him just as soon as we can. we're going to go back to mike now, mike. >> reporter: denise this all started as a demonstration against a juvenile jail facility. and it ended at least to now with seven arrests there could be more arrests. we have some video we shot earlier as police officer were making that arrest. that was before 6:00. this was a combined operation with state police and city police. we had different state troopers coming in and taking out some of these demonstrators who had managed to make it inside the fence into this abandoned lot. they would grab them under their arms and feet and take them through the gate. there's still a number of protesters outside right now, they've been warned if they go inside of this abandoned lot they will be taken away. also they've been warned to take down a tent they put up on the street. they were told if they don't take it down it would be hauled out to the city dump. demonstrators had planned to stay here for fi

wjz is live in east baltimore, mike hellgren is here and explains the group's new message. good evening mike. >> good evening kai. this is as confrontational as we've seen protesters get with police. as you can see they've set up a tent. if you look over to the side you can see some of them have erected a makeshift school building on this particular state owned sight. they are upset about a jail that's going to be erected here. what we're seeing is lots of police. there's a state incident command center, there are dozens of city police officers and we're waiting to see what happens next as this is not over. >> reporter: police were waiting for more than 70 occupy protesters as they tried to break into a lot that would soon be a juvenile jail. >> commanders have already talked to leaders of this group, we're maintaining a dialogue. we want them to stay calm. >> reporter: police are not allowing the protesters inside the lot. but they are allowing them to bring in some of their material including this tent that they're rying to get in. it did turn into a bit of chaos once the

wjz is live, mike hellgren has new information on the investigation. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon, jessica, good afternoon, everybody. that burglary suspect who did crash and die aaron mccoy , jr., had a lengthy criminal record especially for his age, he just turned 20 and had already been found guilty of a large theft and eluding police. >> wow, what a crash. >> police say a breeze especially burglary spree ended yesterday with this tangled mess of cars along delaney valley road. investigators tell wjz they spotted a get away car wanted in a series of burglaries in northern baltimore county and tried to pull it over put the driver took off. only slowing so one of the men inside could jump out. minutes later that driver, 20- year-old aaron nathaniel mccoy , jr., crashed and died, dotty kelso hard the commotion. >> a shame illustrate it had to happen. part of the times we live in. >> police tell us they did not chase anyone. >> a high speed chase is a risky enterprise and takes skill for officers to embark on one. it was a moot point

wjz is live at the courthouse, mike hellgren has the details. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. this is a man who said he wanted to wage jihad against the u.s. government. earlier this month he had pleaded not guilty, but just hours ag that all changed. antonio martinez spent weeks before making the decision to change his plea to guilty, admitting he attempted to use a weapon of mass destruction to blow up the recruitment center in 2010. the plot the government derailed with the help of an informant, who noticed alarming posts on his facebook page. >> i think the work the fbi did in this case is as good as it gets, it documented his intent, he intented to kill people and do damage and admitted that today. >> he went ahead and armed the bomb, drove the car, parked it in front of the building then went to a vantage point to see what would happen. >> the government claims martinez said it was his dream to wage a holy war against the united states. his plea agreement calls for a 25 year prison sentence. the sentence could change. it will

wjz and mike hellgren are live with new information following a briefing. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. at this point authorities have not identified this person but say he did threaten an officer after an initial crash on the beltway. a violent morning ended here at the shopping center, where police shot and killed a man who they say repeatedly tried to get away from them and threatened to kill an officer. police tell wjz it started around 2:00 a.m. when county officers tried to pull over a car on the beltway. the driver refused to stop and crashed at the beltway and i- 95. at this point the suspect was crone confronted by officers. he began to fight. the suspect told an officer he has a gun and will shoot the officer. >> reporter: that suspect then took off in the police cruiser. they tracked him to a motel where they saw a car speeding out of the parking lot. he was inside with two others. >> it was stopped by police and as the officers were in the process of removing three individuals a passenger drove into the driver's seat and flees. >>

reporting live at city police headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. what a story. the city police say the officers involved are from the eastern district. >>> we have an update on the breaking news, a possible carbon monoxide incident in northwest baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. captain mike perry has details for us. captain mike? >> we're in the 1100 block of winchester street. where firefighters a short time ago, about 4:00, were called to the scene for a possible carbon monoxide incident. apparently six people inside a middle group town home are receiving evaluation from fire officials at this time. it's not clear how many of those people will be transported. but fire officials found a generator running in the basement of the town home, along this block. and were able to get it stopped, but not before determining that there were about 600 parts per million on a carbon monoxide level for some of these homes. they are now getting them aired out. it is not clear again, as i said, how many people can be transported or how many other of

mike hellgren breaks down the numbers for us and takes us inside the debate tonight. >> reporter: maryin the summary of this gonzalez poll, it says the issue of same-sex marriage is so close in maryland because the opposition of many african americans. in fact, it is too close to call. >> reporter: legalizing same- sex marriage will be one of the hottest issues in the general assembly. and just-released poll numbers show maryland voters are are split. 49% favor it. 47% oppose. that's within the margin of error. >> reporter: keylawmakers, including baltimore's mayor and the governor, are pushing for passage. but the polls show a huge divide among african american voters. only 33% favor it, 60% are opposed. peter sprig is fighting against legalization. >> african americans understand that the color of a person is not comparable to the sex acts that a person chooses to engage in. >> reporter: but supporters have key allies in the naacp. representative donna edwards came out forcefully for legalization this week. >> we can't pick and choose the civil rights that we fight for. >> reporter:

mike hellgren tells us what the church is doing about it. >> reporter: good afternoon, he worked in towson and they notified church leaders, it is a misdemeanor charge. it does carry the possibility of jail time. the archdiocese has stripped a police of his duties. police say they found him with his pants down. they say they stepped up security since the incident. >> it is very fortunate. we don't condone it in anyway. he made a mistake. you know he was a priest but he was still a person. >> late at night, i don't believe there was hardly anybody else here and they just happened to come in. you know the police just happened to come unand do a routine patrol and caught him pack there and it was very unfortunate. >> father bullock lived and worked at the church of the immaculate conception. in a letter to parishioners they asked him to get an evaluation. he wrote i realize this may be shocking but i wanted to share this news directly and ask for your prayers for father bullock and for our parish. and he is of course considered noibt innocent until proven guilty in court. >> he worked in sai

tonight mike hellgren has the 911 call if teenagers who tried to stop the tragedy from happening. >> we have a two vehicle collision. >> reporter: you can hear first responders as they rush to the scene of mangled trucks on highway 60. the wreck was so bad one of those cars bursts into flames. >> oh my god he's on the other side. >> i was mainly concerned he wasn't coming right at me. if he gets that far, there's going to be a real problem. it doesn't look like he was weaving. it might have been that somebody got on the wrong side of the highway, there's no traffic and they didn't realize it. >> reporter: three people died including two teenagers. according to police and published reports britney walker was with two friends heading south on the northbound lanes of interstate 47 and somehow continued the wrong way on busy highway 50 headed west where she collided head on with a bmw. >> i'm trying to think where the heck did he get on at, unless he did a turn around or something and got confused. he, she whoever it is. >> reporter: state police are still investigating how someone could

wjz is live at city police headquarters, mike hellgren breaks down the numbers and what they mean, mike. >> reporter: here's the big number. police made 25,000 fewer arrests last year. the charges are more likely to stick and they say they are continuing to target repeat violent offenders. >>> crime tape and bullet markers played a big part in baltimore this year. the number of murders marched toward 400 a year in the 1990s. but violent crime has dropped in recent years and in 2011 the city had 196 murders, the lowest number since 1977. >> you think it's a significant threshold to be below 200? >> for this city yeah. for sure. >> we see a lot of gunshots, and it's a lot more quiet now. >> reporter: but not everyone is feeling safer. greene has lived in baltimore her entire life. >> i think it's the same basically. i really do. you have to try to protect everybody at the same time. >> until people can look out their window and from the place that they live and feel that sense of security, we haven't gotten the job done. >> reporter: the city says violent crime was down 6%. murders down 1

mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> anderson's maryland post was her first with the national park service. >>> we're following some breaking news in baltimore county, where many drivers are running into dangerous conditions. let's go to sky eye chopper 13. captain mike perry is over the scene with details. >> hello, kai. we're up in cockeysville area of baltimore county. this is york road. and as you look, you can see some tough sledding, literally, as cars come down seven-mile hill. this is between, again, phoenix road, and thornton mill road. the roads are very, very icy up here, due to a very snow squall that just came through this area. now, baltimore county police and maryland state police have requested state highways to solve both i-83 and york road in the sparks area of baltimore county. we can see substantial backups, both directions in york road, in the sparks area, as state highways try to get some salt crews out here to address these very slippery conditions. some of these snow squalls that are moving through are moving pretty moderate amounts of snow. you can see the
