i would like to thank sheriff mike hennessey. one thing about this entire process that needs to be made clear is that most of us here in this room believe that he is one of the great public servants. he has been serving the san francisco -- the people of san francisco for the past 18 years. there are many reasons to support the candidacy of mike hennessey and i would like to thank him personally for being able to do this. the job for the interim mayor will be an extremely daunting one. so, this is not a little thing to agree to sit and take that post for 10 months. i would also like to thank mr. lee. the fact that he has also put himself forward speaks highly of mr. lee. as mentioned, he was the director of purchasing, the director of the department of public works, he was the director of the human rights commission. he has worked in almost every area of san francisco government. he has overseen our capital plan. bandwidth he oversees -- he oversees the city's disaster recovery and response. this is a very important issue in dist

when i nominated mike hennessey three days ago, as i indicated at the time, i did so in the spirit of trying to bring this board together, and trying to find someone that we could all get behind, and specifically mike hennessey, because the mayor himself had indicated that he was comfortable with mike hennessey serving in that role, and because the other supervisors on this board indicated that they would support mike hennessey. i don't really know what happened between the time that those representations were made and the actual vote took place. one thing that i will say is that, in my humble opinion, mike hennessey, who is a resident of my district, with all due respect to everyone involved, did not deserve or does not deserve the kind of treatment that he has received. i think that he is one of the most distinguished public servants that we have had in san francisco. i know that he, like mr. li, was not looking for this job or asking for this appointment. in fact, he only considered it after hearing from so many people, including people allied with mayor newsom and mayor newsom him

the majority on the board thought they had the six votes needed to select mike hennessey but they only got five votes. they were hoping that one of the supervisors would come over to their side. but duffity called for a half hour recess and he contacted gavin newsom. when he came back not only did ed lee have his vote but he had a total of six votes and those who are not part of the majority. at that point they called for another recess. bev said this is why he decided to support ed lee. >> one of the things i thought about is whoever comes in to do this job has to balance a lot of things besides the budget. they have a progressive majority on the board and doing a good job of working with the city departments and making the city work over the next year. and i believe that ed can do that. and i think he is somebody that had a life career in civil rights that by any measure would qualify him. >> reporter: when they came back from the recess it was suggested they would vote and that ed lee would be the new interim mayor. but that vote never took place. they had various conversations one

hennessey. what i want to underscore with mike is not just that he gets along with just about everyone in local government. for me, what is most compelling is his origins and where he comes from and the fact that creating the san francisco kill project or the fact that a lifetime of commitment to alternatives to incarceration, reentry programs, rehabilitation of san francisco's prisoners and shows the commitment to social justice was almost unparalleled in san francisco. so, i will be voting to support the sheriff and i hope that we actually don't get it passed the first questions so i will not comment on the others at this point. to say that the downside for me in terms of my support of the sheriff's and my reservations, talking to me at the tavern, my concern is that i don't believe that he will go out and be aggressive in terms of pushing a political program. he is the caretaker premier which i had actually spoken against. he will not likely, sometimes you call it blocking. he will not try to go out and clear the way for any particular candidate for board president or for his seat as a sheri
