mike inouye is keeping an eye on the roads withes, but begin with christie smith, who just got an updaten the construction. she is live in oakland now with more. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you you marla. well, this is certainly what you want to hear on a project like this that has had so many setbacks over the years. caltrans just updated us and basically told us that everything is looking good on this project with the overnight construction and demolition of the old bridge connected to the new eastern portion of the bay bridge. now, one of the critical areas is the grinding of the asphalt leading to the toll plaza. new asphalt will be laid down. everywhere you look this morning, heavy equipment out there on the road since the closure last night at 8:00. now, some of the last work on the 6 had $6.4 billion span, that's what's going on, designed to be more seismically safe before it can open up. 32 rods have failed earlier this year but the fix is holding. it actually threatened the september 3rd opening. today though, on the approach, 1,000-foot section is being

check with mike inouye. schooling's pack in session. extra volume? >> over the last couple of weeks, we've seen craziness over the roadways as far as how packed the roadways are. yesterday all around the bay in particular. right now 5:37. we're seeing a standard flow of traffic through san jose northbound 101. good number of headlights. i want to update you. map to south bay. smooth flow of traffic. a lot of slowing jamming up south of 280/880 interchange on southbound 280. the bumming of the slowing cleared up. it was a couple of slower moving vehicles and that may have messes the sensor data up. it averages based on speed. fewer cars can mess things up. it was not a problem. live look to palo alto. easy drive. north bound out of palo alto, san mateo, smooth flow of traffic. san mateo, foster city schools back in session. palo alto they've been in session over a week here. toward the other side of the bay, smooth drive. headlights westbound 80, east shore freeway off of the racetrack. racetrack towards berkeley. good volume but you're at the limit.

first let's send it down the line to mike inouye. >> all right. taking it right here and we'll stop at the bay bridge. we'll pause, i should say. if you have fastrak, you should be slowed to 25. cash payers have to stop for a second. as folks approach, another shot, traffic flowing north past 880. earlier slowing we have the traffic breaks clearing. now just a mild slowing to about 55 at their worse. up toward the 980 interchange for north 880. a smooth drive toward the dublin interchange. 680 through sunol. a nice smooth flow at the limit. a little more slowing as the traffic builds coming out of the altamont pass. the earlier truck that was in lanes is over on the shoulder at west grant line road. that's a distraction, not a major problem, just the volume coming into livermore. we head outside a see the north bay, southbound 101 shows the smooth flow. san rafael and down toward the richmond-san rafael bridge. >>> 5:10 right now. a little hockey news. sharks center joe thornton was invited to canada's hockey orientation but decided not to attend.

first let's check your drive with mike inouye. >> very active. less than a half hour ago, we had a sig alert closing all lanes of northbound 880 through san jose. nourks just less than half hour ago they reopened the lanes. let me show you what took so long and caused the backup. there was a crash involving a couple vehicles. one of them a pickup truck, the other a sedan that was flipped over onto its roof and it had all these debris and the fluid in the area. it wasn't until just about 30 minutes ago, 5:38 when they were able to reopen that. all this activity took quite some time to clear. over 90 minutes until they could clear that. they are very close to oak connor hospital. i don't know if that's where the victims were taken. it has cleared. speeds have recovered through the area. just coming up to the speed limit. upper 50s until just a couple minutes ago. there you go. this is as we're starting to see a real build kick in for the southbound. northbound 101 showing speeds consistently slow. the volume looks heavier. that is the case when the

first i want to look at your drive with mike inouye. >> looking to oakland right now. the coliseum past o.co looks just fine. you see the taillights, just a few of them, very light traffic through the nimitz. farther north on the maps you see it coming toward the coliseum out of downtown, we have the construction zone, every morning between 4:30 and 5:00 as they start to move crews around, we'll see the speeds slow down as they merge back into traffic and clear those lanes. it is late slow there. on the peninsula side, we have no slowing on the sensors, but southbound 101 approaching sierra point parkway heading toward candlestick. reports of a couple cars going 100 miles per hour and a crash off the roadway. they're investigating because some folks were seen walking along the shoulder. they may have actually walked away from the crash. there's maybe another truck on the side. activity on the shoulder. no slowing past that scene. there's the san mateo bridge, registering slow on our sensors. very light traffic. no problems. >> no one going 100 miles per hour there. >>

here is mike inouye. >> thank you, thank you. that's always swinging. we're looking toward the peninsula. missing any traffic flow. very good news for 101. that's the look at palo alto. no surprises. the map will show getting on to eastbound 92, construction still there. that could cause slowing that we see east 92 approaching 101. flashing lights, because of the overnight construction. also southbound coming out of san bruno, we have a construction zone as well. a little slowing south of the airport. the north construction looks like it's cleared. we'll follow that on the peninsula as well as the east bay. the castro valley y and the approach to the san mateo bridge, no problem, those are two focal points. a reminder we're talking the potential for a strike. 72-hour notice given. b.a.r.t. is running on time with all trains in service. all mass transit agencies reporting no issues. great news as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza. should it happen, we'll be here for you starting at 4:00 a.m. flashing lights in the parking lot. that's a maintenance cre

first let's check on the traffic alert with mike inouye. >> still going on in san jose. we do have that sig alert still in effect. look at this. we have turned our camera. we did finally find inactivity, north 880, the on-ramp from 280 as it mernls with the other folks at the top of the screen, they'll back up. just north of this interchange -- let me show you on the map, it is there, north 880 at bass couple or as you're approaching bascom. the earlier slowing we saw is clearing up. it will come back again. the cars we saw were on the transition ramp. the freeway will start stacking up as it did. they did just reopen one lane. your shoulder, as you're getting past the scene. if you stay on bascom avenue itself and stay off 880 and join up with it, you can join just north of the crash. that should take you around the backup. traffic very light in the area. those folks that are stuck in the freeway between 280 and stevens creek look like they're just starting to eke past the crash. 87 is an alternate as well. we'll track this as the crew gets on scene. i have another cras

mike inouye has the alternatives. how loss does it look? >> as you said it has been six hours since that overturned bigging retook place. here, look at the grade of sinole, i said get on at mission or washington, if you can. right there only three miles south of the crash, still took him an hour to get through that. that's huge backup. if you can, you can also take mission boulevard to cut part of that corner, as bob did, getting through the area of fremont, southern end of the crash and the backup there. also, if you are continuing on through mission and take that up toward highway 84, that is niles canyon road, you can get over there. there is a big backup that happened late in the commute, but starting to ease once again, taking you to 680, get you back on 680 north of the crash and all of the backup. that is a slow drive through that windy portion but keep you moving as opposed to the shot we showed you earlier. the chopper from time to time above the scene, seen people in place trying to get it lifted, hoping by noon. doesn't happen by

let's find out how we're heating up on the roads with mike inouye. >> not so hot. what i mean.'s slow. i backed up the camera. you can see a wide shot of 580. look at this right next to me, all the lights streaming over and stacked up approaching the maze. want to show you where it is on the map. this is affecting west 24 as you come over toward 580 and 980 and has 580 tied up. what it looks like from the traffic flow is the first of the crashes over here, 580 and 24, that may have been moving from the roadway. that might be the reason why 580 is looking better. now we have a second crash over here at the maze. that's complicating things, causing that ripple back over there. we continue to track that. of course, we need to let the folks on site do their work. we'll let the pictures do the talking. also north 880 shows heavy traffic. that might also mean some of the folks backed up on 580 traveled through oakland via north 880 as well. watching all the shifts. in the meantime we have the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza which is to be expected. looking over toward the southbo

let's check the drive with mike inouye. >> cal doesn't start till next week. right now the eastshore freeway just taking plenty of folks to work and down toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the bay bridge closes next week at this time. you will not be able to use it. right now i was watching for a disabled vehicle at powell. it sounds like all the activity isolated to the on-ramp. we see to volume moving smoothly along university avenue. the map shows a similar situation as you're coming through the area. no slowing registers toward berkeley or emeryville. the metering lights may turn on earlier than the summer, more volume of traffic coming through the area. a drive into san francisco, a reminder get together the golden gate bridge will be the problem that was the focus of all the traffic last time the bridge was closed. right now an easy drive. giants play tonight, not a concern. the concern is southbound 101 towards brisbane. there's a disabled postal big rig that they're removing from lanes. the two right lanes are blocked. >> the time is 5:40. president oba

let's check the drive with mike inouye. >>> i have the emeryville camera turned.you see the curve itself with the cameras stacked up, all the way around the bend, toward the bay bridge toll plaza. also coming across from the left to the right, you see folks coming off 580 and the maze, also jamming up before you get onto that approach to the v÷ ba bridge. it's traffic tuesday another live look outside and see how things are shaping up across the san mateo bridge. that's a little lighter, but on the east bay side, hayward and the approach. a slow drive from 238 on 880 down to 92. that's where you'll find a lot of congestion as well as the castro valley y. in problems on the peninsula. we'll move toward the south bay. northbound 101, showing the build again, just about 6:30 kicking in north of 680. highway 87, speeds coming into the 50s and building as the volume builds heading up from capital expressway all the way to downtown san jose. highway 85 shows a bit of volume increase and speeds start to dip a bit. over here we have the flow through the tri-valley. althou
