we'll get to mike inouye in just a second. bob, you were telling us a number of obstacles preventing those folks from being able to clear the scene. >> yes. it's going to be quite some time. we expect this mess to be here through the morning commute and as a result, if you have any reason to be traveling up and down through hayward my advice try to avoid the area. this is southbound 880. the headlights heading towards us and only one lane that is open at southbound 880 because of what you have right here. you have wreckers out here and what they're trying to do. they're not even trying to move it off the road. they're just trying to move the trailer to the side of the road so they can at least get one or two lanes back open. this big rig overturned around 3:00 this morning and because of a vehicle that was stalled along the road. chp just informed us a few vehicles involved. eeth arbig rig or another car that hit that abandoned vehicle on the side of the road and then the ensuing collision. four vehicles involved. the abandone

let's bring in mike inouye. how long are those delays? >> you saw that half the freeway there is closed in the northbound direction, and that is where we typically see a huge backup. that's what we saw this morning. look at this stretch, from paige mill road all the way back to highway 85, that's the big jam. folks are making their way to 101, el camino and central expressway. that will continue until they clear that. the late morning commute still brings traffic up there. meanwhile, the rest of them lighter up. 101 is a better drive there. you also talked about the power outage in downtown berkley. the station is closed. you can still use the richmond line, but no one is getting on or off the trains at that downtown berkley station, so there's a bridge in place for that scene. >>> a san mateo deputy involved in a serious collision on the peninsula today. you can see the patrol car stuck underneath another car in this picture. that picture posted by the sheriff's department on twitter this morning. our nbc chopper over the scene this morn

we get the very latest now on the commute from mike inouye. this is really a bad situation. the trailer you showed was the second of two. and that car, that van smashed into another trailer that was there earlier this morning on the opposite side of the freeway. now the southbound lanes are clear, but look how much it's jammed. from san leandro in towards union city. the northbound side still has two lanes blocked and that's a distraction because they're trying to remove that cab you showed from the roadway, so that's a big issue. both directions, fremont, union city and hayward are all affected. the south bay really has seen traffic kick in and so is the peninsula, so slowing through palo alto and parts of 101. no drama toward the bay bridge, but it's still backed up. back to you. >> very bad situation there, mike. thank you very much. we'll have more updates coming up in a half hour. >>> hi, everybody. it's 8:30. it's wednesday, april 20th. the sun is shining really bright on our plaza and our crowd. happy to have them. >>> coming up, what p
