our kris sanchez live in santa cruz mountains tracking the downpour there and mike inouye tracking those slick road conditions already impacting commuters. >> we noticed on our drive in but, first, meteorologist kari hall is tracking the storm. what's the updated time line looking like? >>> we're seeing it now, the heavy rain around the bay area and it will continue for the next several hours off and on and with the south bay really getting the brunt of the storm hitting the santa cruz mountains. we've seen rainfall rates at about 2 3/4 inches per hour, so that will create a lot of standing water on the roadways and the poor drainage areas are dealing with the water just standing there. we're seeing it right there on 580 as well as the castro valley y and then moving up to san ramon with some intense rainfall that continues up toward concord and moving over towards parts of the delta as well. we'll see the rain continue for the peninsula, lighter for san mateo and san francisco but we're still seeing the heavy rain in richmond that's just now starting to ease up a bit but moving to hercu

so give yourself extra time if you had to head out this morning so you don't end up in one of mike inouye's traffic reports. >> absolutely. let me talk about what you're showing. look at this, this is highway 87 this morning, southbound 87 underneath that taylor street over-crossing. even on sunny days sometimes the drainage is an issue. today we're hearing about as deep as two feet by some people who drove through the area. as we look at the map now, they were forced off the freeway on south 87 and then got back on. they were able to get around that flooded spot. when you see that much water, avoid it, anyway. they're going to close the roadway if chp is alerted about that. we just saw the slowing clear up after they reopened 87 within the last hour. that was a long-standing issue. green showing damp roadways. this affected the rails as well. b.a.r.t. lowered their speed and will continue when there's inclement weather. there will be debris, also. capital changed their schedule, buses heading east toward reno and south lake ta hoe. there's no service out of gilroy because of a caltrans cra

mike inouye was tracking the crash all morning. this happened 4:30 this morning on cherry avenue. police say the victim was a crosswalk. the driver has cooperated with investigators. nearby roads were blocked off but they are now hope. this is san jose's 30th pedestrian death this year. >>> a suspect due in court today connected to a stabbing that injured a teenager last week in the north bay. the stabbing happened on the campus of a novato elementary school. the 16-year-old victim suffered serious injuries. a second teenager was assaulted. police yesterday announced the arrest of five juveniles and one adult. the adult suspect is also the one set to appear in court. they are not facing charges tied to the stabbing, which police believe was gang related. >>> authorities this morning are still not identifying the 73-year-old man beaten to death yesterday outside of a san francisco convenience store. the chaotic scene unfolded yesterday morning along bayshore avenue. police say the suspect was attacking people inside the 7-eleven and then moved out outside where he assaulted a senio

mike inouye tracking a big backup on northbound 680 and actually some problems on the southbound side, too. >> absolutely right, laura. both directions are currently stopped this is a caltrans camera. it's a still picture but backed up to bernal. we see some headlights here. on the maps what we're talking about. you are basically cut off through pleasanton and sunol. that connection is not available right now because of that bernal cutoff. a rolled over big rig. 8:30 to 9:00 before this can open. highway 94 is the alternate or folks heading over to the dublin grade. both areas because of the light holiday traffic still showing at speed but this is a huge note for folks traveling south from concord to walnut creek and expecting to head straight down to the south bay. avoid 680 through pleasanton and sunol. the rest of the bay, kari, an easy drive. a beautiful, nice light drive. a beautiful view as well. >> it looks great and it's a holiday so it may in other spots be a lighter commute and it's cold out there. our temperatures starting out in the upper 30s and low 40s. your commute acro
