our mike inouye keeping an eye on the commute this morning. >>> first, meteorologist kari hall has a look at where the storm is right now. >>> it really hit us hard this morning but now things are coupling down, still some gusty winds and scattered showers moving through. in the north bay right now we're seeing the next wave of rain coming in moving across the richmond/san rafael brimming as well as as you head over to the east bay moving across the benicia bridge and will continue to see once again off and on rain, a lot of intense storms moving through the central valley and pushing off to the east. there is more off the coast that still has yet to work into our area, and then we turn our attention to the next storm that will be coming in tomorrow. we will continue to see very active weather here as more lightning and small hail will be possible today. and then for tonight, it tapers off for just a little while, but during the time today we could see about 1 to 3 inches of rainfall. the next storm coming in tomorrow morning will continue that threat of more flooding and power outag

mike inouye monitoring the slick roads out there. a lot of branches and trees. watch out as you head out the shutdown on highway 17 this morning. >>> first, we want to get a look at the storm's path. meteorologist kari hall is tracking that hour-by-hour forecast. winds are a big concern, too, kari. >>> i saw a 71-mile-per-hour wind gust near los gatos, and we're still seeing 50-mile-per-hour winds in a lot of our hills around the bay area. this was with that initial line of the storm arriving this morning, and we're still seeing lingering showers in marin county, now moving to oakland as well as richmond. we now have a severe thunderstorm warning near sacramento that continues f the next 15 minutes. if you have to call and check on them. we have a tornado warning in effect to the east of modesto, and that is also producing a lot of lightning as that storm moves through the bay area. it really intensified once it moved over to the sacramento valley, and we're seeing a steady line of cloud-to-ground lightning, winds and intense rainfall. that's what we're dealing

mike inouye has been tracking the roads. >> i just got a new flood report. >> we'll check in with mike in just a moment, but let's first check in with kari and a look at the latest storm and its path. >>> it's been really windy this morning. that's been the main issue. we see scattered showers continue as we are tracking it all with our storm ranger on mobile doppler radar. we are seeing some of the rain return, southern sonoma around petaluma and moving over to napa as well as vacaville and down toward vallejo we're seeing scattered showers. it's going to be off and on today. where we see hit-or-miss rain and more water coming down on a ground that's already saturated. for the north bay a steady rain that's been moving through south san jose down to morgan hill as well as gilroy, so the rounds of rain will be with us. we'll see some breaks of rain in between. when we do get the breaks of rain today they'll pack more of a punch, more thunderstorms possible, more gusty winds and i'm also seeing more storms developing off the coast. well, that's going to be moving in within the next coup

our mike inouye is tracking the morning commute. he'll have more in a moment. first, let's get to meteorologist kari hall. what does it look like now, kari? >>> we are seeing widespread rain. look at how the storms are just lining up out there in the pacific and bringing all of that rain into the bay area with yet again another atmospheric river. as we get another look at what's happening right now, once again, a steady widespread rain coming along with gusty winds, so that makes it tough to see as you're driving around. seeing some of the heaviest pockets of the rain right on the peninsula and also for parts of the east bay as you're driving on either 580 or 680. we'll see some of the heavy rain moving through. the high wind warning continues until 10:00 and also the heaviest of the rain happening this morning. some of our mountains may reach 3 to 6 inches of rain and also there's the risk of isolated thunderstorms and damages wind gusts. take a look at our hour-by-hour forecast, pockets of heavy rain moving through especially as you head over towards parts of

. >>> we want to send things to mike inouye because he's been monitoring the roads. traffic certainly is slower, but for good reason. >> that's right, because you should slow down and because the conditions don't allow for great visual representation of what's out there. you can't see how deep the water is. it's making it tough for us to see 880. we had a couple of crashes here past the coliseum. this is 880, the nimitz, southbound past the coliseum. a good number of cars went off the roadway or spun out. we're looking at 580 as well, coming toward the castro valley y, officially categorized as another spinout. the blue on the map is where we're going to have puddling, ponding, portions of standing water. you see that extending through contra costa county coming off the venetian bridge and that will affect pleasant hill, all these areas, with all the runoff. the golden gate bridge is smooth, but they're running traffic breaks to clear drains. use caution when you see those flashing lights. back to you. >> good to know. thanks, mike. >>> the bay area will be under a f

. >>> we're going to talk to nbc bay area's mike inouye. you've seen so many traffic problems out there all morning long. what's the latest? >> all that video, the instances you just discussed, we have it going on right here. folks, here is the south bay and the green sensors on the map sort of blend in with the green highlighting. we're talking about the damp roadways. let's zoom in to a couple of persistent problems. with all the rain, flooding, and that continues right here for southbound 280. the connecter to 87 is still reportedly closed. southbound 280 is open. we had several lanes, at times the entire freeway southbound was blocked by water as you head south toward 87. again, the connecter is working on drainage issues so that is remaining a factor there. wires down, we talked about that. this is st. tomas expressway. pg&e is in the area. stay clear. you can get to winchester and around the area on 17 as well. the rest of the bay, 84 continues with the mud, dirt and rockslides, and we're looking toward walnut creek, eastbound, yvr wi

we want to bring in mike inouye right now. drivers are seeing an impact, especially on 17 where bob redell was. >> exactly. i think we have the still shots of that same section. you see over on the right side, that is the entire southbound side of 17. bob showed us a little progress there, but this is an important note. i want to show you the map. you see a closer shot of all the debris. the entire hillside basically came down with trees, debris, mud, rocks. that's why south 17 is still closed. bob showed one lane that had been cleared by the caltrans crews. a reminder, in case you only saw the video, it's still closed to anyone except those emergency crews, southbound 17 still closed for the foreseeable future. there was some talk of hoping to get one lane, perhaps, cleared later on today. but they don't even have a time, an estimate there. southbound 17 closed, northbound 17 restricted at times, very slow, and likely for more inclement weather we may have other issues. only one direction is open right now. as we look at the

let's check in with mike inouye.hem are crashes, some of them are disabled vehicles, roadway hazards, flooding incidents like mud slides and trees down, but there were 100 active incidents at pretty much any given time over the last hour. things are calming down a little bit, but that means fewer people are coming in. folks, you heard about monterrey road being closed because of the rising waters. there's little llagas and fisher creek. what morgan hill chp is offering, butterfield, which locals will know is also a north/south avenue through the area. take butterfield boulevard to get around that closure of monterrey road. and that is one section of monterrey road, but the entire area is going to have a lot of water, obviously. but between those creeks, that's one concern. 101 hasn't seen a closure, but we've seen a lot of slowing traffic in your usual spots, just made slower by the conditions and visibility. now, if you were with us at the beginning, as we came into programming, you would notice the fact that the bl

mike inouye, you've got the details. >>> i do.there from what i understand about 2 dozen vehicles on the right shoulder, as you see here, lined up after getting damage from a pothole in the area. i learned a few seconds ago they've shut down northbound 101 through the area in order to get crews out there. let's take you back out to the maps and we're showing you that area north, again, north of embarcadero and marsh, highway 84, north 101 is currently blocked because of pothole repair work. 2 dozen cars on the shoulder. 280 is a better alternate. kari? >>> such a mess. we're seeing the residual effects of the early morning heavy rain. even though we're seeing the rain taper off for much of the bay area there are scattered showers in the santa cruz mountains and parts of the peninsula. we are going to continue to see that move away, but still a chance of pop-up showers and thunderstorms over the next couple of hours into the early afternoon. and then heading into tomorrow we'll see a lot more sunshine, but temperatures stay cool th
