mike inouye is tracking the work-arounds for you. first, let's check in with kris sanchez. she joins us live with a look at the activity. >> reporter: laura, the work doesn't start until after 9:00 tonight, but caltrans has been staging materials and equipment along the route. i know you saw some on your way into work this morning. i want to show you the area where the work is going to happen. we can't show you this enough. the roadway closure is going to be on highway 87. mike is going to go into more details about the detours in a moment, but this is the big picture. highway 87 will be closed only in the northbound direction from 85 connecter in the south, to the 280 connecter ramps all the way in the north, as early as 8:00 tonight is when the ramps are going to start to close. the roadway work will begin at 9:00. the northbound closure is the beginning of a $69 million project that will replace the pavement, update ramps at six differently intersections, improve the drainage, guardrails and barriers will be upgrade skpd the bike lanes that run parallel will be resurface

. >> mike inouye is in the newsroom right now with what drivers will need to keep in mind. it's going to be around for a few days. >> it's a major section of 87, the majority of that south bay freeway, northbound will be closed. let's take a look at these maps. we see slowing from an earlier crash, but it's open this morning. all lanes are open. crews are staging. tonight at 9:00 p.m., there will be a full closure. on-ramps likely closing sometime starting after 8:00, so plan on that as well. that stretch coming from 85 all the way to downtown will be closed from tonight all the way potentially until monday morning at 5:00 a.m. you have a sizable reroute. that red stretch of roadway is five miles from 85 to downtown. but the other route heading toward 17 and then back on 270 to downtown is another ten miles, in addition. so that's 15 miles, triple the distance, and more than triple the time. longer still, 85 south to 101 and then back up 280 to the north. if you're getting to the airport, downtown san jose, that will impact you. monterey highway, some options, lincoln as we

let's check in with our traffic reporter mike inouye and look at the roads right now. and looking further ahead, another closure to expect. >> that video was pretty steady, not bad. that person was not driving, by the way. it's a lot better now, a lot smoother than last week. that's the idea behind the repaving. don't worry, i have my eye on this crash on almaden near 85. but we're looking at 87. all weekend it was closed in the northbound direction, and it reopened about an hour ahead of schedule. we haven't heard about any problems, but let us know what you think about the paving work. they have to smooth out that paving onto the surface on the on-ramps and off-ramps, so plan for extra time. we talked about that closure on the southbound side. they have to repave that as well. that's slated for october 20th to the 23rd, that weekend. it will be the same reroute congestion as far as the roadways to go, adding 10 to 15 miles. we'll prepare you for that on the weekend of october 20th. we'll update you as we get close to that date. back to you. >> thanks, mike. >>> light

let's talk to mike inouye and find out what's going on on the road right now and when people should get going on their weekend road trips. >>> we have a window. we're talking about the best and the worst times to travel as aggregated by our friends at aaa. they're saying friday, today, it's best to travel before 11:00 a.m. sorry, folks, but you have a good window because later on in the afternoon, the worst it gets on the roadways. 11:00 p.m. the worst for the holiday getaway. monday, very crowded during the day after 7:00 p.m., the best time to return on the roadways as well. that goes for the drive. also talking about the drive, i wanted to get to where you cannot drive right now. that started last night. this is westbound 80 across the carquinez bridge from vallejo to highway 4. you cannot travel that section until they reopen after their weekend-long paving project. it's scheduled to reopen by tuesday at 5:00 a.m. at the latest. we'll follow this of course. but look at this shift. all morning long we've been seeing the build coming down 780 across the venetian bridge and back onto h

mike inouye is here with a look at b.a.r.t.'s new schedule. good morning. >> good morning, scott. they've got a reimagined schedule, if you will. first of all, it means more trains, more train time options also to choose from. let's take a look at the map over here. b.a.r.t.'s adding more train service on their busiest line. take a look. what i mean by that is the yellow line, right. it goes through contra costa county with a train every ten minutes. that originates out of antioch and heads across the bay or under the bay. b.a.r.t. is changing its schedule to make the service more available at night and on weekends. people near lafayette and walnut creek will have more service to san francisco, richmond. b.a.r.t. says the new schedule means no riders, no riders throughout system will have to wait more than 30 minutes for a train. that's the promise, no matter the time of day, day of the week. it all starts next monday. of course we will keep you updated on how those trains come through and whether or not those promises are resolved. some schedule changes, so they're promising clea

let's check in with mike inouye, who is tracking a closer look at the traffic advisories that we needut and the best and worst times to head out the door. >>> let's use data from aaa, because they talked about the best and the worst travel times to get out there. aaa did publish some data talking about when it would be best to hit the roadway because this is a big driving holiday. they say friday it's best to leave before 11:00 a.m. i would add after our shows are over, so you have a good window. the early commute on friday is light for the traffic flow because folks have already gotten away yesterday. from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., that's the worst time to leave town because everybody is doing that. monday, the worst time to return is after 7:00 p.m. that's the best time to come back because most folks will be traveling during the middle part of the day between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. one area disturbing the flow is the closure for the carquinez bridge, remember, westbound coming out of vallejo and in toward the east bay, toward berkeley, that is closed right now. it will remain clos
