denver mayor mike johnston, not be confused with house speaker mike johnson. mayor, it's great to have you here tonight. this is a real issue that you're dealing with on a daily basis. and i know that officials in your city have been very firm that it is hitting a breaking point in handling the influx of migrants. what is the situation in denver as it stands this evening? >> yeah, thank you so much for having me, kaitlan. and we are on the front lines. denver is right now the single largest recipient per capita of any city in the country in terms of the number of migrants arriving to our city. so we know exactly what we're facing. we know exactly what's not working. what is broken about the current situation is you have someone who comes into the border with a valid claim of asylum, folks that have credible fear about persecution in their country. they get admitted into the country. but i talked to a migrant yesterday who has an asylum date in 2029. it is six years out because there is a backlog of capacity to hear the cases at the border. then governor abbott

with us now is denver mayor mike johnston. it is always great seeing you. thank you for your time.an impact is the migrant humanitarian crisis having on denver? >> yeah, thank you so much for having me. it is definitely both a humanitarian crisis for the migrants that arriving and creating a fiscal crisis for the city. as you mentioned, we had more than 36,000 migrants arrive and these are people with incredible stories. these are people that are literally the huddled masses yearning to breathe free, teachers and police officers and nurses and engineers who have walked 3,000 miles to get to this country and all they want is the chance to work and support themselves and their families. there are heart breaking stories every day, but we also know without federal support and without federal action, the impact on a city like denver, this would be $180 million impact on our budget in 2024, that's more than 10% of our entire city budget. so we believe there is a path to a solution here, there is going to be bipartisan agreement on how we can both increase access, provide more support at

first, some mayors like mike johnston in denver and others are using these truly creative ideas to getld more housing? how do we once and for all get more support for hud frankly, we need more funding. one thing is the immigration issue, as distinct from our federal partners, for us, it is a housing issue. on kansas city, we're seeing an increase in populations from venezuela and haiti, something new for us. then the third part of it relates to drug addiction, substance abuse, and the mental health issues that people are facing. without addressing all three, we'll continue to see the incredible numbers of rising homelessness across the country. after 2020 and 2021 and covid, we thought you'd see numbers go down. the world would get back to normal. you are not seeing that with homelessness. you're really not seeing that with a lot of downtowns in our country, and that's something all mayors are facing. >> mayor holt, let's get back to the immigration issues for a second. is oklahoma city also seeing the impact of people coming in through the southern border? are they ending up in oklaho
