gained steam after the controversial trip to paris ch it looked like john kelly, the chief of staff would be moved aside and mikece's chief of staff would be elevated. they have been supporters of and have been pushing him on the president. spent election night with the president and the first lady. what happened is there is a very intense pushback from kelly's allies inside the west wing and others who basically said they could not work in that position and there could be a staff revolt if he got job. as we have all seen nick has not been promoted into that job. once again, we are back where we started where john kelly is holding on as chief of staff but really with sort of a very shakey hold on that position. he turned it into an influence in republican politics. it worked his way into his inner circle. what they see is someone who understands deeply the republican base who is a strategist and operative. we are in campaign season, we are looking ahead to 2020. john kelly is many things. they don't understand the way an operative or strategist would. i think that's the key value that they see that he would brin

mike pence. one thing i'll say about the tr transition of a chief of staff is john kelly had a rocky tenure from the start. he's gotten on the wrong side of the first lady a few times which is never a good place to be. you talk to people there's a desire for someone that that role who has more of a political antenna. john kelly has never been that type of chief of staff. there's a number of reasons around at this time why the president might be thinking about this is finally the moment when he might want to replace john kelly. are other potential changes related to the midterm results or we're in this chronic state of wonder who is next to go from the trump white house. is it just an extension of what we have been talking about for two years? >> in traditional white houses, the mid term is a natural point to reshuffle the chairs. this is not a traditional white house. saying the mid terms are a cause for someone to leave, doesn't make since when you continue to claim the midterms were a big success. when you look at previous changes they have been around the midterm. rahm emmanuel left the white
