mike lawler joining us now. you voted for expulsion. what is the historic vote about?think about the leadership of the speaker, the majority leader voting against it? >> this was about restoring trust in the institution and holding george santos accountable. he not only defrauded voters, he defrauded donors, stealing money, putting it into his personal account to pay for clothing from hermes to botox infections. it was truly absurd. he was unfit to serve. i called for his resignation going back to the beginning of the year. that's why my colleagues, why we pushed for this vote to bring the expulsion resolution to the floor. today you saw a broad bipartisan vote. two-thirds required to remove him from office. this was not about due process. he was afforded every opportunity to comply and work with the ethics committee and answer their questions. he chose not to. that ethics committee report was damming. with respect to leadership, look, every member has the right to vote their conscience, to vote what they think is in the best interest. i'm not in the business of tellin

we already heard, for example, from new york republican mike lawler who today had said that these charges very concerning, and he will be voting yes to move forward on that formal impeachment inquiry. the second thing here is, though, if hunter biden does not appear, the committee holds him in contempt of congress and then that vote on this impeachment inquiry could happen as early as wednesday. that could potentially put hunter biden in a worse spot if they continue to escalate this investigation, and we already know, by the way, that despite this being a vote on an impeachment inquiry and not on impeachment articles that speaker mike johnson is willing to go that far. he said time and time again that if the evidence, if the committee's investigation warrants, he's willing to move forward to a formal impeachment inquiry of president joe biden, hunter biden's father as early as january when they come back in the new year and certainly all of these pieces are tied together as we continue to see to light in hunter biden's case. >> very quickly, julie, do they have those votes for an impeach

i'll point to mike lawler, and nick -- his particular his colleagues around new york state who were vulnerable, who are up for reelection. but have competitive sites in 2024. they have been very vocal in attacking him. in maintaining that he has no place in congress for his alleged fraud. for his apparent lies. he wants to strike back. he's out of office, now something that he told me, told other reporters, that he knew the votes were there for. he doesn't want to go quietly. he loves the public eye. he loves the spotlight. he's out for revenge. yes. >> so, up to the very last minute, as you know, it wasn't quite clear if this vote was going to pass. ultimately, the top four republicans in leadership, they did vote against the measure. what drove the other republicans to push him out, even though it now narrows their hold in the house. >> you're right. it was a bit of a surprise to see so many republicans dismissed the signal from leadership, from steve scalise, from mike johnson, from stefanik, who said they'd vote against the expulsion measure. but i really found that george santos had wrong
