mike lee, the director, asked me about four years before we started and he asked me to learn how to painturner. i said i presume that's j.m.w., not tina. >> seth: sure. >> he said, yeah. [ laughter ] i said i've got the legs, but i can't sing. [ laughter ] and he said, "yeah, the painter. so, would learn to paint for a couple of years?" i said, all right then. so, i did. i was given this course and i read all the books, because when you work with mike lee, brilliant director who gets you to make the film as you go along. so, i had to try to build this character and with the research, bring them together and make this man come to life, you know? >> seth: yeah, very -- first, i will say this is one of the greatest grunt -- you grunt and are guttural. you speak with noises in the film more than anyone i have ever seen. not since nell have i seen someone that -- what did you learn about him, seems like a very contradictory character? [ grunts ] [ laughter ] >> well, extremely contradictory. what presented itself was a massive impediment. everything you read said he was kind. he was horrible.
