today, environmental mike marshall of the yosemite restoration campaign calls it a mistake. >> no othery in the country is allowed to score their water from a national park. >> marshall and other environmentalists have called for the removal of the dam and the restore ration of the valley. today a group delivered 16,000 signatures to the department of elections hoping to qualify for an initiative on the november ballot. the measure would call on san francisco to study the possibility of removing the dam and it would also require the city to conserve more water through water recycling. >> the city needs to do a better job of managing its water and then, begin to figure out if we can restore the valley. >> reporter: the group believes that the group could find alternatives to the water, but that's a tall order. >> it's really left up to where are you going to find new sources of water when californians are looking for new sources of water every day. >> reporter: the dam's removal could cost $10 million. >> in this very long and windy measure that's been put before them, there's a possibil

even dianne feinstein is opposed to it but backing the measure is mike marshall who joins us now. when i bring this up to people they looked me in the face in and ask if i'm serious? you want to drain it? >> it is important for everyone to remember that the source of our water supply is the tuolumne river and restore that in nine different reservoirs'. most people don't realize we have nine reservoirs' in hetchhetchi system. what we want to do is have san francisco to come up with a plan to consolidate nine reservoirs' into eight reservoirs' and undo the damage we have done to yosemite park over the last 100 years. john muir called the valley great landscape garden and compared the flooding of the two flooding the sistine chapel. can you imagine today if the sistine chapel was full of water that we would want to restore it? >> this debate has been going on for decades, why now? we know that tax money is hard to come by right now and it would be very expensive proposition, up to $10 billion to complete the project >> that is what this initiative is about, figuring out how much it w

hillary i think came in through burke marshall. mike conway came in through burke marshall. various people came in through burke and the yale connection, bill and hillary clinton obviously went to yale. well, it wasn't hillary clinton then. she was hillary rodham then. so burke was a key figure both in recruiting people and advising doar, and burke was a very sensible guy. he was a great assistant general judge of the civil rights division prior to doar having that position. i mets burke marshall actually, i worked in the summer of 1960. i graduated law school in '61. so i think i met burke marshall 14 years before when i was just a kid before i graduated law school even when i worked at covington and burling for the summer. and he was a partner. that was during the year that kennedy was running for president. this was 1960. kennedy hadn't yet been elected. i worked the summer of 1960. he was elected november of 1960. i knew burke slightly. he was a partner, a young partner. i was a second year summer associate. but i had great respect for him and he was a wonderful assistan

mike inouye, you have a chance to meet him. he is going to be out there in the parade in fremont, the grand marshal. your drive. also oakland, how nice it's going to be. many years we have not been able to see the fireworks from the bay area at the coast. this is not one of those years. make those plans in oakland, in san francisco. i'm going to bet my bottom dollar on it. 9:00 p.m., it will be cool enough for a jacket but hey, the skies will remain clear and it will be gorgeous. 80 in livermore, 76 in san jose, 79 degrees in los gatos. throughout the week temperatures right around average for this time of year so we don't swing your temperatures down in the opposite direction either. we're going to hold on to consistent weather all the way through this monday. it feels more like summer. not too hot. we'll let you know when that changes. here is the grand marshal himself. >> grand marshal in fremont, join us and also there will be traffic because we're stocking it for the parade. looking to the south bay, traffic flows nicely in the northbound routes, slowing here, 87 and 101. north of 680 we see th

mike. continuing with tim williams with a look at rainfall totals. tim? >> mary, we've seen the rain totals impress ive around the state. the official reporting station at b.w.i. marshall only gets a little bit when everybody else is getting a lot. they had one inch out of the last storms that rolled through here last night. look at the totals. 3.16 inches in 24 hours. almost a 4 1/4 inches. 3.35 around long green and 3 1/4 at science center. they sit and dump a lot of rain at a bit of time. if you wonder why the thunderstorms seem to be stronger than typical, think of the weather we've had. weather is all about balance. we've had extremely high temperatures, extremely high dew points with a lot of moisture that's the fuel for the thunderstorms. they take the force equally as strong. so when the cool air moves in and we're on the dividing line between the two, we get the clash and the storm with wind, rain and hail. we'll have more but bob will have the complete updated first warning weather forecast. it should be calm in a few moments back inside. >> thank you. remember, wjz 13 is always on checking in for first warning weather coverage for instant updates at any time
