. >> join me now is mike memoli, nbc news correspondent in philadelphia where biden is speaking on the former republican congressman david jolly of florida. mike memoli, it seemed to me joe biden was sharpening his attack in this nearly hour-long interview last night with trevor noah. >> that's right, andrea. as one campaign adviser put it to us several weeks ago, the thing that keeps them up at night is this question of whether donald trump will challenge the results of an election. you heard the former vice president making that clear. also telling trevor noah that the campaign is ready to have lawyers sent around the country to make sure that the vote is being protected. today we expect to see him running just a little bit behind, as you know, andrea, as is often the case, for an event that's supposed to focus on the economy and what the biden campaign says will be an effort to discuss the vice president's plan to safely reopen the economy after the coronavirus. he's going to be joined by a small business owner as well as a recently-unemployed worker here in the city. this coming as

mike memoli covers joe biden for us. and mike, what more do we know about this oversight board as we look at live pictures inside this church? it appears as if the apparent democratic nominee and a number of people there have their heads bowed in prayer. >> reporter: yeah, craig. this new announcement from the former vice president just this morning is interesting, because joe biden is somebody who has long cast himself as a law-and-order democrat, a friend of police officers. but he also addressed in his remarks to this group of community leaders this morning that there's been a lot of criticism of him for why is he spending so much time in delaware, obviously, during the pandemic? he said, well, this is the place that trained me, and it was good training. he grew up, as he said, in the civil rights movement in this community, in this state. talked about how the band-aid has been ripped off by both the pandemic and the president in talking about the fact that no one can doubt any longer that communities of color are bear

we're going to go to mike memoli, joining us from wilmington, delaware. mike, you were in the news conference. what stood out to you? >> reporter: first, that the news conference occurred at all. what's been the number one attack we have seen from the trump campaign against joe biden, as he's jumped out to a strong lead is that he's hiding in the basement. he did a zoom conference in april. the fact that he's doing this, and even stayed longer than his aides might have liked him to, is certainly part of the story. you saw him comfortable in that setting. the topic of the speech he gave itself was the coronavirus and the contrast that the biden campaign believes what voters is going to be deciding on in november. you saw the former vice president doing a month-by-month, side-by-died comparison of his statements and recommendation about what he would be doing as president, as it relates to the coronavirus versus what president trump has been saying and doing. let's take a listen to some of the vice president's remarks, laying out what he sees as the importa

i want to bring in right now mike memoli who has been covering the biden campaign and with me also ishe chair of the department of african-american studies at princeton universities. let me begin with mike quickly. mike, this is a vice president who's trying to draw a very stark contrast between him and the current president. explain to us a little bit how we got to this moment. why did he decide to come to philadelphia today to deliver this speech. >> reporter: just to put this in a little bit of context, today is election day in pennsylvania, and six other states as well. this is the biggest single day of voting since the pandemic shut everything down right after super tuesday. this was a challenge, but also an opportunity for joe biden to really -- to get to this point. he is on the cusp of clenching the nomination and he got here for two reasons, one, his strong support among african-american voters and secondly the vision among democrats that this was their best candidate to take on donald trump. the challenge and the opportunity for him today was to show that he could meet the m

. >> and mike memoli has a great new article out today talking the fact that dr.n is going to have a big influence over who the former vice president picks to be his running mate. how significant is the choice, and do you think that biden needs to shift anything in his campaign right now? >> i have to say that staying in the basement has worked out for him pretty well. looking at the polls, it's hard to criticize what he's doing. the only problem, of course, is that we have a 24/7 news cycle. there is a vacuum. there's not a lot going to be happening with the democratic convention here in milwaukee. so there's going to be a disproportionate amount of attention on the vp. and of course, given his age, it's going to be a significant thing. in the end, like most elections, i don't think this election will turn on who the vice presidential choice is. >> all right, well, a lot of interesting threads to track on this friday. charlie sykes, always so great to get your insight, really appreciate it. >>> and that is all for me for this hour. again, in a little more than ju

. >> chuck, let's bring in nbc news correspondent mike memoli, sorry for that delay. hen we have these setups. mike, let's talk a little bit about what the biden team from your conversations with him were hoping to do today. >> reporter: well, katy, as you were just outlining, this is not one of those election where most americans doubt there's a difference between the two candidates and as it relates to the two biggest issues at the moment -- the economy and pandemic. interconnected issues. not a wider gulf between what the president thinks and what the former vice president thinks and i think the clear evidence of that in part is the fact that the trump campaign is encouraging us to take his remarks live, there was a memo from the campaign yesterday, they think that biden has been as you just heard from the former vice president he says he's squarely in line where a president should be right now, speaking the truth to the american people about the fact that this pandemic isn't going to away, tweet it away, ignore it away at this in the po. as you indicated as well, h
