ktvu's mike mibach reports on the 75th anniversary of the hoping of the san francisco bay bridge. >> reporter: the bay bridge at 85 she has aged out so gracefully. >> it's really nice to look at. >> reporter: a wrinkle here, maybe one there, but for 7.5 decades. >> there are curves to it and not just square blocks. she has stood tall over the bay, connecting one community to the next. >> it's a great view from wherever you, look down, looking up, it's just beautiful. >> reporter: the summer 1933, with the great depression underway, that is when it all gab to fake shape. the towers, the cables, the tunnel, one day at a time. >> it took three years and four months to construct. >> reporter: and during that time more than 20 men lost their lives, building what is so high and what is so far and in the eyes of some she may not be as beautiful as the golden gate bridge, but she is strong and she is has endured. 9 million cars traveled across the bridge in its first year and an estimated 200 million traveled across it last year. the bay bridge was hit hard by the loma prieta earthquake that

i'm mike mibach. >> i'm tori campbell. it's thursday, november 10th. dave clark has the day off. >>> topping our news, another tense standoff in the "occupy movement." this time it's on the campus of uc berkeley. police and protesters have been involved in several violent confrontations overnight. alex sav vig joins us -- savidge has more. >> reporter: good morning. so far the students are being allowed to camp out here in front of sprawl hall. you can see police officers are standing by, uc berkeley police, and you can also see that a couple of tents are set up on the plaza area and some people are sleeping in sleeping bags. a very calm scene, a lot different than what we saw late last night as police moved in to clear out what was a growing encampment here, part of the "occupy cal" movement. >> peaceful process! >> peaceful process! >> peaceful process! >> hey! get back! back! back! >> reporter: this is the scene last night as protesters clashed with police at sprowl plaza on the campus. officers in riot gear used their batons to push through a group

. >> and i'm mike mibach in tonight for frank somerville. there's a small but growing memorial tonight outside vallejo police headquarters following the death of a veteran officer. james capoot was married with three daughters. capoot once served with the marines and had been on the vallejo police force for the last 19 years. we begin tonight with amber lee and tonight's outpouring of sadness and grief, amber. >> reporter: mike people have been stopping here at police headquarters all night leaving flowers, candles and a balloon to pay tribute to the fallen officer. we've learned that officer jim capoot loved people in this community and reached out to them in a way that makes this loss deeply painful. around 6:30 tonight at kaiser hospital in vallejo, the body of officer capoot was taken away in a flag draped casket. a somber salute to a man who served the police department for 19 years. y ears. fellow officered were lined up and tried to console each other over this devastating loss. not far from the hospital, students at vallejo hospital
