and for more on this now we're joined by mike morell the former deputy director of the cio now senior security contributor and john miller who used to be at cbs news is deputy commissioner for the new york police department. gentlemen, thank you mike, to you first. al qaeda and yes, ma'am senn now claiming responsibility for the first of these attacks what do you think of that? >> i can't remember a time, bob when al qaeda and yemen took responsibility for an attack that turned out to be wrong. i take claim of responsibility, claim that they directed this attack very seriously. we don't know what direction means, could be having told these two individuals to go back attack this particular media outlet. it could have been more than that. we'll have to wait and see. but i do think al qaeda was in part responsible for this. i do think that is something very, very important about all this. we've been focused on isis for the last nine months to 12 months. this is a reminder that al qaeda is still very dangerous and still very significant threat to the west western europe and united states.

mike morell is the former number two at the c.i.a. he's our senior security contributor. michael, is it a credible claim these attacks were directed by al quaida in the arabian peninsula? >> scott, i can't remember a time where al quaida in the arabian peninsula al quaida in yemen has made a claim of responsibility that has turned out to be false. so i take their claim with some significant credibility, yes. >> pelley: why is it significant that this would be connected to aqap al quaida? >> two things. one is aqap has some of the most sophisticated bombs in the terrorist world and their ability to send fighters to conduct an attack also means they might be able to send bombs forward for an an attack. these are bolts that can't be detected by x-ray or dogs. so that's one reason. the other is this is going to put a lot of money in aqap's pockets. one of the ways you raise money in the terrorist world is to have a successful attack. >> pelley: what are security officials in the united states going to have to think about after all this? >> one of the lessons for me this week

mike morell is with us and also former cbs correspondent john miller.e's now new york city's deputy commissioner for police intelligence and counter counterterrorism. thank you both for being here this morning. let me begin with you, mike. what do we know about the tell us? >> the link to yemen is interesting to me. we had at least two of the suspects say they were al qaeda in yemen. now we know that one of them traveled there. i think there's a good possibility that we're looking at an al qaeda in yemen directed attack which would be the first al qaeda in yemen attackinst the west since the christmas day bombing in 2009? >> is al qaeda in yemen linked in any way? >> they're linked to al qaeda in pakistan. that's different than isis. they're in competition with each other for prominence and fund-raising. very different. >> this is a very significant development that he travelled in yemen in 2011 because the question we have is whether these are two brothers around the brother-in-law acting as lone wolf or whether they were receiving direction from yemen

lou: your reaction to leon panetta, mike morell has been leading the agency and both men say that int sooner or later al qaeda radical islamist terror, will be attacking this country. are you as fatalistic as they are? >> leon panetta and mike morell call balls and strikes and they definitely have called a strike this time. we have the best intelligence organization in the world, we have the best enforcement and counterintelligence and we do a tremendous job of surveilling those individuals that we think might carry out this. and so i think that is what leon panetta and mike are expressing. it's things that we don't know and it's events like terrorists takedowns like belgium things that give us new intelligent mode so we can go out and track down whether there is an individual here that we need to be aware of, but here is the key thing, you can't take away the tools and we have to have the access to metadata. we have to have the ability for pfizer warns to be exercised with sufficient court supervision. take them away from us and our intelligence and law enforcement won't be any bett

we go to mike morell former cia deputy director. good morning, mike. >> good morning, charlie. >> what can you say about the sources and what we know so far? >> charlie, this is the worst terror attack in europe since the attacks in london in july of 2005. we haven't lost this many people since that attack. the motive here is absolutely clear, trying to shut down a media organization t lampooned prophet mohammed. no doubt in my mind this is terrorism. what we have to figure out here is the perpetrators and whether they were self-radicalized or whether they were individuals who fought in syria and iraq and came back or whether they were actually directed by isis or by al qaeda. there's a lot to figure out here, but this is clearly a terrorist attack and one of the worst we've seen in a long time. >> president hollande is having an emergency cabinet meeting this afternoon in paris. what can the government do? what are the options for it? >> the two most important things charlie, are, number one, to find the perpetrators, and number two

i would read a lot into what mike morell is saying, which is the two models that are out there right now, one is the isis model. their job is to take territory, hold it, plant a flag and say "this is the islamic state." they're in the nation building business right now as a terrorist organization. al qaeda of the arabian peninsula, or aqap al qaeda in yemen, their job is as an external planning and operations node for al qaeda. so what you would be -- what this would suggest is if there is travel to yemen, if there is connection to al qaeda, if there is an aqap connection here, that this was an organized and directed by al qaeda's principal external planning operation attack against the west and you also have to separate what aqap's job is. al qaeda long ago, after drone strikes and everything else kind of handed the ticket to aqap in yemen and said your job is to figure out how to attack the united states and allies in the west. >> can we talk about security at home? these two brothers were known jihadists. presumably the french government knew they had travelled to yemen. if there'

defense secretary leon panetta and mike morell warning that the same kind of attack could happen herettack. take a listen. >> we had the ft. hood shootings. we had the boston bombings. so we've had radicalized americans conduct these attacks. i expect more. i think we're going to see a paris-style attack here. we need to be prepared for that. >> they are engaged in a much more aggressive effort to conduct violence not only in europe but i think it's a matter of time before they direct it at the united states as well. >> valerie, is there any information indicating that the threat to the u.s. homeland is worse now than it was a year or two ago? these are two former cia directors who seem to be vaiing be prepared for what happened in europe to happen here. >> i think the point that's an important one is that we have to be vigilant. we have to be prepared. when i say "we," certainly the president and his team are going to do everything within our power, but also the american people. we encourage them to have a watchful eye, pay attention to what's going on around you. everyone should be

mike morell is a former deputy director of the cia. who is this group of rebels? >> this group is a shia group in what is a largely sunni country. they've been fighting an insurgency against the government for years. there's been on-again-off-again fires. there have been negotiations under way. those negotiations broke down in the last few days. >> okay. so the yemeni government accuses iran of this saudi-backed rebel group. is that a concern? >> iran poses many many challenges to us and their allies. they want to be the most influential power in the region. that's not in our region. they conduct terrorism as a tool of state craft. they support terror groups. they support sunni insurgent groups in the region. this is an example of that. >> mike, what can the united states do? >> this happened once before. there was a political break joup in sanaa in 2011/2012. during that time charlie, al qaeda and yemen grew considerably. it ended up controlling almost a third of the country. we put this back together politically at that time. the state department did a very very
