as mike morell said, iran is a regional bully. the saudis are frustrated by american's lack of action. we need to push back against iranian meddling in the region so the saudis are less anxious. if we should write a blank check for the saudis and the actions they take as they sometimes try to flail out against their enemies, i think that's a terrible mistake. it's gotten us in trouble for a generation. i don't think we should repeat that mistake again. >> rose: it was said by many they were sending a message to us. what message should we be sending to them? >> well the message they're sending to us is we're going to take care of our own security because we don't really trust you and i think the message we need to send again as we have at president obama's obama meeting at camp david with gulf leaders and repeated messages we send to them privately is we're there. we do have your back. our commitments to your security in terms of military assistance, in term of forces in the region, in terms of our declared policy couldn't be clear

we begin this evening with a conversation with mike morell, former deputy director of the c.i.a.ok at the iranian nuclear deal all by itself, when i actually read through it the first time, i was amazed at what the iranians had given up. i mean shocked. the nuclear deal on it's own is a very good deal. it sets them back 10 to 15 years on their nuclear weapons program. it pushes the breakout time from a couple months to well over a year and it makes it much more difficult for them to cheat and develop a weapon in secret. so the nuclear deal all by itself is in my view a very good deal. the problem comes with the rest of iranian behavior. the difference between the way we

morell, any thoughts on russian response to additional escalation on our part? >> i agree with what both robert and mike have said. i'm much more concerned about iranian escalation than i am about russian escalation. i think the key to getting the resolutions on board with the strategy that you eloquently outlined here is to get the russians to twist the arm of the iranians. i think that's how the process has to go. bring enough pain to the russians where they see the solution that we all see and then get them to twist the iranians' arm. >> thank you for your responses and for being here. thank you, mr. chairman. >> as you all have heard from number of members, this has been tremendously helpful and insightful, in some very difficult problems. dr. vickers, i need to publicly confess that i am quoting you a lot these days. when you said we ought to figure out what we would do after the next big 9/11 style attack here at home, and do that before the attack. it seems to me to be a measure of common sense. i'm not sure the president is on the same page with us. but it could certainly alleviate a lot of casu
