joining us to talk about it all, mike murphy, d.r. barton, susan li.e all here so we can look each other in the face and make our points. switching gears to the money. stocks not too far away from record territory. we talked about that. strong season for earnings coming up, the banks this week, mike murphy, if they are better than expected or just show good strength with nice guidance, is that the next leg up for the markets if we get that? >> it most certainly is. the market has moved up in anticipation of good earnings but if you look at the banks, i think it's a great point that the banks have been laggards for this year and last year also. they have all been sitting very range-bound. good earnings out of the banks could propel the banks higher. the market likes when financials kind of take a leadership position. susan: i like when you say strong, because it is a strong earnings season, but when you compare it to last year, it's going to be much weaker so we are expecting earnings to be down about 4% and earnings are expected to be flat to zero grow

mike murphy who worked for the superpack after jeb got out of the race, our theory was to dominate thelishment lane. that was the strategy. it did not work. i think it was the right strategy for jeb . the problem was there was a huge anti-establishment wave. the market place was looking for something different. is it any different among democrats where joe biden wants to be the establishment lane? how big is it? >> i think if you think of sort of the early states and what the map looks like, i mean, there is a pretty moderate lane that he can go through. it's basically south carolina, states like that, african-american voters looking to see who can win this white house. they tend to be conservative voters in terms of their choices and sometimes in terms of views, as well. there is obviously a fight for the african-american vote. kamala harris is doing work obviously in south carolina to shore up some support there. i think there is a real case that he can make that he can assemble enough voters, older white voters, older african-american voters to win. >> i have to poipt this out. iowa

joining mel right now ceo of rosecliff and managing partner mike murphy. mike, greet see you this morning. mike: good morning, happy to see you. maria: when's your take on earnings and backdrop for today? >> i think the earnings so far, maria, have been quite good. when you look at individual names, company like google, it always sets up a little tough for investors when companies are trading at all-time highs, google put great quarter based on past years but the growth is slowing there so what you're seeing this morning is market repricing it. individual names are going to trade higher if they can sustain the growth they are showing, lower if they can't, overall it's very strong, a lot of growth in the market, you just have to find it. maria: yeah, you had the expectations coming all the way down and now feels like the first quarter has exceeded the expectations. >> absolutely, you know, remember going back to 3 or 4 months now, we were talking about recessions, companies that are going to have massive slowdowns, we are going to have just really bad 2019,

joining our conversation mike murphy, and jason johnson.'m grappling with today, two things that i just find galling. one, that she was any sort of guardrail. she made those policies happen. she was his go-to gal on the most -- on immigration policies so inhumane laura bush, who is so reluctant to speak out about anything likened them to japanese internment camps and the news it's going to get worse. >> yeah because it's going to be stephen miller and his white nationalist tendencies are obvious. he goes back to relationships with richard spencer and the alt-right in several different areas. i think more disturbing she was under no circumstances fighting against the administration she was trying to find ways to smooth it done, cover it with sugar and make it okay. that's what makes it so disgusting you have people that are otherwise okay bureaucrats are capable in engaging in the worst behaviors possible all with the justification of doing what this president wants. >> i miss john mccain for a lot of reasons but mostly for the deal he worke

he, the vice premier of china heading over to the white house, let's bring in rebecca walser and mike murphy like groundhog day but every night we get these reports essentially out of washington, edward lawrence, our reporter, somebody says we're almost there, almost there, now maybe it's for real that we are almost there with china. what's your read on it? >> i think that's a great way to sum it up. but if you look right now, the market is looking past this, i think. the market expects a china deal to get done. i think a china deal will get completed. really, i think the market now is being drawn to those old highs, the market momentum is there to take out the old highs. unless this deal completely falls apart, that would be a negative. if it doesn't, if we get any sort of a deal, i think the market will make new highs in the near term. connell: any sort of a deal thing is what a lot of investors point to. you can get the academic types, people who have looked at china for years and years, say it's the type of deal, of tyou have enforcement mechanisms but the investment community want to ge

mike murphy here. lauren simonetti. as we're going through these, charles payne, what we're seeing is, the concern people had for banks dissipate ad bit. i know each has its own story, but what do you have? >> banks were considered the number one stock pick group on wall street, january of last year, january of this year. so in part because they were supposed to do very well from the federal reserve being more aggressive. apart from jpmorgan number the december rate hike helped this number, particularly making money on the consumer lending side. that theses is starting to play out. it should start to work out. i'm glad banks are lending money to main street instead of relying solely on the fate of trading. that is the sort of ridiculous. goldman sachs, it will be interesting to see how they do. neil: with savers, they barely budge. >> interest rates alone, not that much they can give you. neil: that's what they say. lauren, a lot of guys are saying, rate hike we had in the period just being discussed was good for them,

mike murphy is here, d.r. is here, susan is back and ashley webster.you very much for all that hard work. all great stuff. this is all about earnings. this is the strength of earnings that's propelling this market up. am i right or am i right? >> you are correct. the bar was set very low, companies are coming in with very strong earnings so people want to put money off the sidelines coming into the market, people are buying the market. new highs are in sight and we will make them very soon. stuart: lots of money on the sidelines to come back in, you think? >> there is. mike is dead on there. i think that bar was set low but by analysts who get paid to do this work. we were at minus 4.2% on average for the s&p to go down in earnings year over year. now it's up to 2.3%. so much stronger than we anticipated. that's a good thing. stuart: sure is. if you set the bar low -- [ speaking simultaneously ] stuart: the dow is at 26,500, couple hundred points away from the all-time high. attention, parents. walmart will drop kids clothing off at your door through a

mike murphy is here, d.r. barton is here, susan li, ashley webster. we are all here together.he entire conspiracy. great year for stocks thus far. just gone straight up right from the get-go. murphy, what's the driving force? >> people realize that when you look out, we're not looking at any major negatives. we are actually looking at a strong economy. we are actually looking at housing starts to tick up a little bit so there's more positives out there for the market. people are saying best place to invest right now is the market and remember one thing. when you have a strong quarter like we did in q1, people start feeling good about their investments again so they want to allocate more money to them. >> strong earnings in q1, much stronger than anticipated. i think central banks around the globe are helping and this has been a broad rally. lots of stocks participating, not just a few big stocks dragging us up. that's very key. ashley: if you want yield, where are you going to get it? u.s. equities, right? stuart: at this moment, that's right. this is a story about amazon and

barton, mike murphy, susan li, ashley webster. mr. murphy, to you first. strong to me at least, up over 5% compared to last year. we are going to go to new highs? >> we are going to new highs. profits are very strong. remember, also the bar had been lowered going into this earnings season. so the bar is easier to clear but just the fact that it's a lower bar is one thing. companies are actually coming out like you saw twitter this morning, they are coming out with some blowout quarters. companies are doing great. that's more profit for the markets. ashley: 20% of the s&p reported profits up 6.1% so far. stuart: they were supposed to be down 2.3%. we have beaten that. okay. ashley: so far, so good. stuart: new highs soon? >> new highs very soon. much more encouraging, i think, is that revenues are beating by more than profits. that's a key thing. that's growth, not just financial things. so that's really encouraging. stuart: now tell me about facebook and microsoft. they report on wednesday afternoon. amazon, thursday afternoon. all three of these huge tech
