murphy. mike, mike, mike, i need you to react to what you saw and heard tonight and be honest. >> well, i think president trump did a very good job of getting the fidel castro award for long oratory. that is a hard to achieve thing. i think seriously if you're a trump supporter, you got a convention you liked. you got a lot of new arguments you can go argue with people about. so trump, you know, and pence and the rest of them strengthened the votes they already have. the problem is the president's behind, and he didn't do much in this convention, i think, to get the votes he needs that don't like him. and so they did -- they did scuff up biden pretty well. i think the polls will tighten a little bit. but democrats shouldn't panic. fundamentally i don't think trump really moved the ball forward, particularly as long as joe biden watches his flank on this culture war stuff about cops and looters. that's where he could have a vulnerability, and the republicans are setting up the ball. but all in all

tough, no-nonsense outsider who can't be bought or intimidated. >> so still with us are our guests mike murphynd james carville. so, mike, you heard the lady from florida. we heard the first lady tonight say donald trump was an authentic person. who's this designed to work on? >> well, every once in a while in these two nights they've taken kind of an awkward fling at humanizing trump, you know, captain empathy. it's a hard sell. i thought melania gave a good speech, but it had very little to do with her husband. at the end of it, i wanted to put her down as undecided on the re-election because, you know, she gives the kind of empathy speech that he can't. and when tiffany and eric spoke, it was just the talking points of the trump, you know, revolution, all republican primary stuff and not anything about any dimension to this guy. so they're bad at it, and it doesn't work, and i don't think people believe it. trump's brand is kind of strength and fighting and grievance. so these softer side of donald things, i think, fall pretty flat. and it's striking to me that if anybody ought to be able t
