we're starting with abc7 news meteorologist mike nicco with details on the high fire danger. >> we'll talk about what happened at 5:00, that's when the red flag warning began. that was for all the areas but the santa cruz mountains, that begins at 5:00 this evening. it fogoes through 5:00 tomorrow evening. they have a shorter duration of critical fire conditions. those north and northeast gusts are not here yet of 45 to 5555 miles per hour, but the beginning of the wind advisory started at 6:00. expect increasing winds today and tonight. downed power lines could create fires and spread them rapidly. mount tam, about 17 to 22. that's about as comfortable as it will get. temperatures in the 40s to 50s through 7:00. kind of chilly. most of us in the 60s at noon. 60s at the coast. mid 70s for the rest of us. it will feel comfortable today until the breezes kick in. we'll talk about what happens tonight while you're sleeping. that's when the danger is the highest. >> technical problems at the bay bridge toll plaza. apparently metering lights are cycling on for the carpool lanes as well, th

meteorologist mike nicco is looking at the winds. >> hi, everybody. i know a lot of you as you step out this morning you're going to go, what? i don't feel it. i don't see it. it just began at 5:00, the red flag warning. that's for the areas you see in red outside of the santa cruz mountains where we have to wait another 12 hours thankfully for our high fire danger until 5:00 this evening. we're at the beginning of what could potentially be a wind that could gust up to 35 to 55 miles per hour. fires will start easily. everything is brown, almost everything, and dead and ready to burn. the winds will make it spread rapidly. the fastest winds are about 29 minutes from now, those begin at 6:00. the areas in yellow, mainly above 1,000 feet. this is where we could get the downed tree branches which could cause issues with trying to drive around them. they could also hit power lines and knock those down. that could spark a fire. anything that creates a spark could start a fire today. the winds will just fan it and feed it winds are good above 1,000 feet. 35

here is meteorologist mike nicco. >> thank you. hi, everyone. let me take one worry off your plate this morning. you can step outside with the confidence you'll be breathing clean air for now we are under a spare the air with possibly unhealthy air for sensitive groups developing in the north bay. right now head outside and breathe deeply. it's the cleanest the air has been in a while. let's talk about the fire danger index. we want to get rid of the yellow, the orange and the red. we have in most areas but the north bay at 7:00. we're still dealing with very high fire danger through 10:00 this morning. heading through lunch hour to 1:00, we can see the yellows shrink out there. when do they possibly finally lave us, at 4:00? no, a little bit near cloverdale and mendocino counties, by 6:00 it's gone. still 25 to 33-mile-per-hour winds at grizzly peak. that's still fast and dangerous. when you factor in the dew point, it's zero grily peak. the air is about 15, maybe 10% relative humidity. the breezes tapering at noon. 70 at 4:00. that's when it's

here's mike nicco. >> we have mount diablo at 72-mile-per-hour wind gust.et me put the 72 in perspective. hurricane is 74. mount st. helena, a 55-mile-per-hour wind gust. oakland hills, tamalpais mid up to eveupper 30s. so the winds did come to fruition overnight. look how choppy the bay is from our exploratorium camera at pier 15. those winds running 20 to 30 miles per hour across the bay definitely churning it up. that's why we'll keep the fire danger in through 5:00. seasonal temperatures today. excuse me.calm and warmer tomorrow through saturday. temperatures back to more autumn-like levels starting on sunday. let's look at the critical fire conditions. you can see the diablo range high, yellow, just a few spots over there. still in the orange and also the red, which is the very high and the extreme, our two highest categories. look at that. as the winds pick up, that actually increase over the north bay as we head towards noon, the most critical fire conditions will be in the north bay. notice how quickly they shrink getting to 5:00. temperatures today

. >> meteorologist mike nicco, we are talking with you all day.he power outages and weather concerns. >> the concerns are heightening as we speak. the weather watch has been upgraded as we were sleeping just about an hour ago to a red flag warning. that is for the north bay where you can see in red, also the east bay and the santa cruz mountains. it begins at 5:00 tomorrow morning and goes through thursday. we have lake and mendocino counties under a weather watch. it goes through pretty much the same time frame and conditions north to northeast gusts 45 to 55 miles an hour with very low humidity so fires could easily start and quickly spread with the dry vegetation, the dry winds, and those gusty winds outside. let's take a look at what's going to happen as far as our wind advisory. it's going to be very gusty creating those conditions from 6:00 tomorrow morning until about 3:00 thursday. so if you're on an east/west bridge, it is going to be a nasty crosswind. heading out right now much cooler this morning, upper 40s to upper 50s, on our way to

mike nicco has a look at what the air conditions are right now. >> there are no winds to vent the air. it is stagnant. the possibility of some smoldering and lingering effects from that fire yesterday. the bay area air quality management district has issued an advisory, smoke from the nustar fire may impact areas east of ro day deo including be, pittsburg, areas to the east. as you get to the east, benicia has winds coming out of the northeast at 10 to 20 miles per hour, that could take some of that particulate matter if it's still lingering and push it off to the east. concord, our closest reporting station is yellow. and it is yellow,ed no rat, which is still healthy air everywhere. that's as bad as it gets. other than right in that immediate area, we should be okay. >> thanks. >>> as you were looking at those driving past saw the same thing. it left traffic backed up for miles for most of the day and even into the evening commute. >> i just have been driving from oakland 3 1/2 hours. >> usually it takes five minutes to get here. ten minutes at worst. and it was 30 minutes. i'm like
