mike schuh reports this morning comes after a recent investigation into the recent fatal crash in d.c. >> reporter: this crash in june claimed nine and injured 80. so far the ntsb hasn't pinpointed a cause. a rare sensor in the system decking where trains are located is getting a lot of attention because they are not yet sure, the board has asked transit systems around the country to let them know what steps they have taken or will take to ensure commuters are safe. >> the mta hasn't made any changes. however, we have implemented various confidence tests of the system. >> reporter: the baltimore metro may look a lot like d.c.'s but it's entirely different, like a ford versus a chevy. >> the mta system was mad from a different manufacturer. >> reporter: though different manufacturers, there are similarities between the train controls of the d.c. and baltimore's metro system. now mta is checking to see if any of those similarities to cause problem. >> the mta's signal system aa fail safe system and if any component in the system fails, it stops the movement of trains. >> reporter: no on

mike schuh reports, the damage is to the area below the waterline. >> reporter: these two sets of bridges, spanning the susquestion -- susquehanna are 50 and 70 years old. drop down to the waterline. drop under the water. here is where the problems lie. >> that's where we noticed. earlier this year, with the new inspection process, that there was some deterioration of the substructure. and some of the pilots. >> reporter: both bridges have defects and the concrete and steel pylon, forming the bridge. problems found by a stepped-up inspection plan, put into place. >> that has recently been enhanced, was, in fact, a visual inspection. recently, we changed over to a hands-on inspection. which puts it closer to the structural elements. >> the state has to determine the extent of the damage. figure out what repairs to make. and how to make them. then get contractors to do the work. these repairs jump to the top of the statewide list. >> our public responsibility requires us to elevate the priority of these projects once we identify those types of conditions. >>> there are 29 million bridge cro
