mike schuh has more on the accident that took his life. mike. >> reporter: good morning. coaches say the varsity swimmer dreamed of making it to the junior nationals. a come l -- a couple of nights ago after his club's last meet here, after a team dinner, the 17-year-old record holder was out on a two lane country road and he died while driving home in ownings mills. >> 17-year-old alec cosgarea was known for his power in the pool. >> he had that can do attitude you wish all your athletes had. he had it. he had the entire package. >> this week his young life was cut short. police say koz was drive aring on -- cosgarea was drive aring on green spring avenue when he spun out an a curve, slammed into a tree. he died at maryland shock trauma. >> the crash investigation did indicate that speed was a factor in the case. >> this crash comes at a dangerous time for teens. 20% of fatal issues involving 16 and 17-year-old drivers happen during july and august. >> teens are out of school, they have more time on their hands, they spend more time behind the wheel. >> more than a third
