mike seidel, the weather channel in ohio for that.t's head to atlanta where weather channel meteorologist chris warren is standing by more information on the forecast. i have to say between you and i, we're very lucky to be inside as our good friends are out there in the midwest. >> we certainly are. it is cold. two-thirds of the country freezing temperatures. i touch on a few things that mike seidel was just talking about. first, the snow. we still have lake-effect snow. this is the radar now. anywhere you see white, that's where we still are seeing some of that snow. the lake-effect snow. as far as the next couple of days here, notice it is shifting a little bit to upstate new york. then we have an area of low pressure that could bring two to four inches of snow. northern england and parts of maine. mike also talked about the chance for wintery mess. that's what these advisories are for right here. this is where we could have snow, sleet, possibly some freezing rain. so travel in the next couple of days could be a bit on the tough s

new york city area, where they're really getting it good tonight is erie, p.a., and that means mike seidel must be there. and he is. mike, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. it's been doing this all day, snowing and blowing, whiteouts, swirling snow. and as a result, we've seen a lot of snow here in northwest p.a. as much as 20 inches on the ground already. temperatures in the mid 20s, so it's a very fly dry, fluffy snow. it's being picked up and blown around and drifted. many are slowing down on the highways. but interstate 90, which was shut down last week near buffalo is open tonight. it is the perfect setup, a big storm over eastern canada, swirling down cold air over the warmer lakes. lake temperatures are 20, 30 degrees warmer, and you end up with lake-effect snow. you can add 10 to 15 inches more on the pile in syracuse and erie. if this is a typical season, brian, the snow in these parking lots will be here well into march. back to you. >> mike, i see that's krispy kreme donuts. you best get in there. i know they have hot coffee. thanks for your service to us, mike see

mike seidel is about 200 miles up the coast. mike, good morning to you. >> reporter: and good morning, lester. we're still in the thick of it here in southern new england. a blizzard until noon, up in portland until as late as 5:00 p.m. logan airport is officially open. we take you back to yesterday and last night. snow and blowing snow. 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts here. out on the cape it has been a horrible afternoon and evening and overnight. we've got at least 30,000 customers without power. wind gusts clocked as high as 80 miles an hour, but it's changed from snow to rain. one the snow goes over, it will change back to snow. as far as travel. it's next to impossible where the snow and blowing snow is drifting. amtrak announced the morning that they will get the trains rolling between new york and boston. and, lester, i don't know if my pile is higher than yours, but i'm going to try to mount this one. look at this. you talk about where do they put it? well, all night long, all you hear is plows, plows, and more plows. and th

mike seidel in erie, pennsylvania. good morning, mike -- oh, what a sight! >> reporter: not only cold, but if you're around the great lakes, it's lake-effect snow. we're getting wind gusts over 30 miles an hour. we're right near interstate 90. last week near buffalo, 3 1/2 feet of snow shut down that highway. let me take you to buffalo, it wasn't too bad as this prolonged lake-effect event got underway. syracuse, ended their second-longest streak without an inch of snow, they've had 7 inches of snow, another 2 on the way. here in erie, expecting 3 feet on the ground by tomorrow. not only cold air, but the cold air going south. take a look at the jet stream, a big dip, all the way down to the florida keys. and that's opening the door for the coldest air of the season. it will be even colder by tomorrow morning. look at those temperature departures in miami. about 25 degrees. 43 is 3 off the record. meanwhile, a lot of us -- through cold and windchills. we could see a record tomorrow in orlando, tamron, of 29 degrees. meanwhile, snowing and blowing today and t

mike seidel is just outside of cleveland with an update. >> hi, tamron.t's another bitter cold day across northeast ohio and across all the great lakes, but the lake-effect is finally backing off around cleveland. it's starting to wrap up around south bend in those areas. we had one report of as much as 31 inches over the past few days. meanwhile, i-90 not looking too bad. better than last night. we drove through a white-out that was white-knuckle driving. we still have snow and blowing snow. but getg from buffalo to erie to cleveland, back and forth, is improving. we'll see a better day tomorrow with sunshine. that will start to dry off these roadways. in the mane time, it's the bitter cold. windchills around zero. temperatures will stay in the upper teens to around 20. that's almost 20 degrees below average. and although the lake-effect will end here, and end late tomorrow around syracuse and rochester, we're going to stay in the deep freeze through the weekend with temperatures failing to get above freezing. tamron? >>> well, rahm emanuel has been gett

mike seidel is in cleveland with the latest. mike, good morning to you. >> reporter: as you can see here, it's another day of wind driven lake-effect snow and bitter cold temperatures. this storm was so bad that it took out a major sports arena. cameras inside the metrodome showed the first signs of trouble. snow leaking through the teflon roof. but at 5:00 a.m., it was an avalanche of snow that collapsed into the unoccupied arena leaving a gaping hole in the dome and the football field covered with snow. in the light of day, the metrodome looked like a crater. officials blame the heavy snow and high winds which caused drifts on the dome ceiling leading to the collapse. >> very high winds, that with the high snow accumulation really impacted us. >> reporter: because of the roof collapse, sunday's schedule game between the jet -- was moved to new york. wintry weather battered the midwest. >> there's a lot of snow on the ground. >> with more than two feet of snow falling in parts of minnesota, residents spet sunday trying to free t

the weather channel's mike seidel joins us now from washington, d.c. mike, good morning the you. >> reporter: and good morning, matt. heavy rain and gusty winds are now moving through d.c., baltimore, and up into philadelphia and new york. and a cold front. temperatures here fell 16 driveways in ten minutes this morning. this is the same storm system that has caused big problems in different parts of the nation. this is what's left behind after heavy rain, high wind, and a possible tornado hit an atlanta suburb tuesday. more than 50 homes were damaged, some with rooftops torn right off. >> the wind was pushing really hard on the house. kind of like a train was coming through. >> reporter: in central mississippi, buildings were crushed by tornados with winds estimated as high as 140 miles per hour. some homes knocked right off their foundations. and over the past two days, tornado also touched down in louisiana and alabama. 11 confirmed in the south so far. in the midwest, snow is the problem. visibility was down to zero at times in fargo, north dakota,
