the weather channel's mike seidel joins us. how is it oking right now? >> they're biggest out from under the biggest snowstorm in february. 15 inches of powder shut the city down yesterday. at the airport, 600 flight cancellations. a 150 mile stretch of i-70 reopened. today the symptom dumped on nebraska. they were shoveling cars out of snow banks in omaha and they set a record. it's still snowing there. another inch or two before it wraps up this evening. the storm moves east and weakens and most that falls on sunday will be rain. temperatures still warmer than average. a terrific super bowl sunday forecast in indianapolis. the sun is back out. highs in the upper 40s.

weather channel meteorologist mike seidel joins us now from southern virginia. mike, how's it look out there? >> reporter: well, it's a snowy night here in southwest virginia, lester. they had more snow in an hour this morning than they have seen all season, 6 inches so far. this following yesterday's temperatures in the very spring-like 60s. take a look at how hard it was snowing today on interstate 81 here. near zero visibility. cars and trucks slowed down to half the speed limit and tonight roads were slushy. they'll become icy later on tonight. take a look at the radar. you can see the snow moving from west to east towards the coast. a little burst of snow tonight around norfolk and virginia beach, maybe an inch around the raleigh area. here and over towards richmond, another 2 to 4 inches. lester, tomorrow the sun is back out. back to you. >> mike seidel, thanks. >>> tonight whitney houston has been laid to rest next to her father, john houston, in new jersey. fans and onlookers paid their respects today by lining the route to the cemetery. houston's family

weather channel meteorologist mike seidel joins me from the thick of it. hi, mike. >> reporter: hey, good evening, lester. the snowiest months here in denver typically are november, december and march. none of the top 20 storms that hit here this month where the average snowfall is just six inches. today they saw twice that much snow in the foot hills west of town they had as much as four feet. the storm shut down the city early. traffic accident clogged highways and a long stretch of interstate 70 has been closed due to four to five-foot drifts. more than 600 flights are canceled. another three to five inches of snowfall tonight. here is the forecast in denver as the storm heads east and weakens tomorrow. not before omaha picks up at least six inches of snow. sunday rain and snow in the midwest, but dry and 45, mild for the super bowl on super bowl sunday in indianapolis. on a winter that's featured below-average snowfall in the lower 48, denver is one of few cities including seattle and midland, texas, that overachieved, as the snow continues to add up to

weather channel meteorologist mike seidel with us tonight from desplains, illinois. good evening. >> good evening to you. here in chicago, the wet snow is just getting under way, another city that hasn't seen much snow at all this winter, only 16 inches so far compared to 54 this time last year, but they're saving money. the storm got cranking yesterday and look at these winds howling through the front range in boulder county, colorado. 93 mile an hour wind gusts blew over people in the streets and semis on the highways and knocking out power and the winds gusted to 55 miles an hour early this morning and blew around the snow and there were white-outs and some folks got out with their dogs. it was a mess with numerous accidents. now the snow moves into the midwest, overnight here in chicago and detroit, notice the swathe of snow of 4 to 6 inches. by tomorrow morning snow arrives in parts of the northeast, upstate new york, albany, 2 to 4 before it changes to rain. boston, you've only had 7 inches this winter. now you may get an inch or two before it changes to rain a

weather channel meteorologist mike seidel joins us now from southern virginia. mike, how's it looking out there? >> reporter: well, it's a snowy evening here in southwest virginia, lester. this follows a morning where they saw more snow in one hour than they have seen all season and following yesterday's highs in the 60s, this is quite a turn-around. a taste of reality for one day. take a look at the roads today and the visibility down to about a quarter mile or less on i-81 here in virginia. also heavy snow fell across parts of kentucky and tennessee. take a look at the radar. tonight the inowov mg from west to east. it will taper off here in western virginia in the next coovle of hours heading out towards the coast. chmond maybe gets 2 to 4 inches. m as tamps temperatures fall in raleigh, you may get up to an inch of snowfall. another 2 to 4 here. we've already had 8 inches here but this all moves off the coast tonight. later tonight it tapers off and by 8:00, 9:00 in the morning, the rain and snow is gone, it does not go up the coast. new york, philadelphia, b

and mike seidel -- oh, my gosh!e middle of it all in duluth, minnesota, and this is a picture i have not seen all year, mike. tell us what is going on. >> yes, this is true. we have not had much of a winter he here, and they are running a three-foot deficit. look at this downtown duluth, it is a whiteout, and we are getting the wind gusts 40 miles per hour, and the only thing that is on the positive side is that the temperature is a relative balmy 30 degrees, but the windchill is 15. and looking down the boardwalk to lake superior, huge waves crashing over the seawall, and we have had six to seven inches of snow, and we have is been pounded, and this a full blown blizzard, and snow and wind which qualifies for a blizzard. look at a lake superior, can you see it? five to six-foot waves crashing over the sea wall and so we are getting spray from the lake coming n and it is coating all of the trees, so we have ice secretion here as the blizzard continues. we are looking at storm totals for 8 or 10 inches, and we have s

the weather channel's mike seidel is in withville, virginia with some of the impressive totals. >> reporter: hey, chuck and aaron. the snow is winding down here in southwest virginia, but we picked up 8 1/2 inches here in withville. we're about an hour or so down 81 from roanoke. and just a couple miles down the road big problems this afternoon. late this afternoon a tractor-trailer jackknifed, shutting down both northbound lanes for over five hours. some cars detoured, but most of the semis sat tight, and we watched them this evening roll up the highway en masse. meanwhile, some of the other snowfall totals not far from the district out there in the far suburbs in staunton, virginia picking up five inches of snow. charlottesville, four inches. and in richmond they've had three-plus as the snow continues to fall there this evening. so driving down 95 a little touch and go early in the morning. it will be the back roads, the untreated roads that will be at times slushy and slippery. good day tomorrow here in southwest virginia. but again, the largest storm of the season. and it wouldn't have

the weather channel's mike seidel is in chicago. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, krca. it's been one of the warmest winters on record in the midwest. here in chicago only 16 inches of snow, there was 54. that changed overnight as only the third storm of the season blew into town. heavy, wet snow made driving a mess throughout much of the chicago area. traveling by plane was a real pain, too, with hundreds of flights canceled. perhaps because it's been one of the least snowiest winters on record, some people seemed happy to see it. >> it's been a pretty easy winter. and this is sort of a nice breath of fresh air. >> i wish there was more snow. >> reporter: others, however, were not so happy. >> it's really, really slippery. >> i just don't like it. it's the worst. >> reporter: police in colorado reported dozens of accidents. with parts of i-70 temporarily closed due to windy, slick conditions. in northwest georgia, authorities are still assessing the damage left by a tornado and severe midweek storms. at least 100 homes

mike seidel, thank you very much. say trooi to stay warm. thank you. al, one of our colleagues said it was 52 degrees and sunny yesterday in denver. what flipped the switch? >> it's a big, big, vigorous storm. in fact, behind the storm we have the snow ahead of it. thunderstorms and tornadoes to talk about. as you can see, this is a wide view. you see the tornado watch texas into oklahoma. we have tornado warnings in southern texas and parts of louisiana. let's zoom in and show the snow. you can see it's getting itself together. this is a vigorous storm going on for the next 48 hours as it pulls out of colorado and heads spo the central plains it will be bringing behind it snow, blowing winds, winds over 30 miles per hour. ahead of it, heavy rain and thunderstorms. a possibility of tornadoes, damaging wind and damaging hail as well. snowfall amounts anywhere from a half foot to a foot and a half of snow. rainfall from parts of louisiana, mississippi up into kansas. we are talking two to four inches of rain and some of it could be heavy causing flooding

and my colleague the weather channel, mike seidel, is there in the middle of it. mike, how much have you had so far? >> reporter: we've had about three inches out here. we're just outside of o'hare, tom. three inches is an inch more than at reagan national so far this winter. it's blowing horizontally. we'll get the snow burst continuing for a few hours. 16 inches so far this winter. this time they shoveled and plowed 54. the main impact for out of towners is going to be trying to get out of here today. it's friday, a big travel day. o'hare yesterday, o'hare midway, between them in and outbound flight sclaigz cancelations, over 500. and that will add up this snowfall rate of about an inch an hour. the roadway, i-90 going toward chicago, early rush hour here in chicagoland. everybody's moving okay. baugh do the speed limit. it's a very slushy snow-covered highway. the plows are going by. and tom, fortunately the temperature is not that cold or we'd have more issues with, you know, packed snow and ice. right at freezing. it just got down to freezing over the past cou

the weather channel's mike seidel is in for us for the latest. he's in englewood, colorado. >> reporter: hey, rich armed finally some winter weather in the lower 48. -- hey, richard, finally some winter weather in the loyer 48. a few spots. along with seattle and midland, texas. this is the auto ramp. i-25 northbound going into denv denver. you can see they're taking it nice and easy, crawling up the ramp. it's not but plowed. snow packed and snow-covered. i think a lot of folks have thrown in the towel saying let 's make it a three-day weekend. last night they decided to make it a snow day today. out at the airport, big-time cancellations, richard. nearly 450 flights have been canceled. out of a total of 1,700, that's a pretty good chunk. delays getting out or in are averaging two hours ago. a full complement of snow plows across the area. the only downside on the storm it's the plains and the foothills. in fact, some of the foothills west of boulder have seen over two feet of snow with snowfall rates over 2 inches an hour. but once you get over

the weather channel's mike seidel is in englewood, colorado, with more. mike, good morning. sounds like a huge storm. >> reporter: it is. already, ann, in boulder, colorado, northwest of denver, they've had two feet of snow earlier this morning. snowing more than 2 to 2 1/2 inches an hour. on i-25, photographic traffic i slowly, 30 to 35 miles an hour. the interstates and ramps are snow covered. i think a lot of folks have decided to make it a three-day weekends because of the forecast. denver public schools threw in the towel at dinnertime last night. and the other school districts followed. out at denver international airport, it's slow going, delays in and out at least two hours. but a lot of flight cancellations right now running over 450 flights out of 1700. that's a big chunk of flights out of dia. some airlines have canceled other flights until later on this afternoon. now, this snow will continue through today, tonight into tomorrow morning. it will head east along i-80 into des moines and omaha. and ann, if we get more than 14.1 inches of snow out of this storm, it
