all receiving the first measurable snowfall of the year and joining us from leesburg, virginia, mike seidelmike. >> reporter: good morning, out here west of washington, the entire area encased in ice following yesterday's snowfall. now the roads are in good shape because they did salt these yesterday. and as you can see out here we're not slipping and sliding at all. anything that's untreated and certainly your car, you will have to chip the ice away this morning. it's pretty thick. you can see what happened down here. the snow got compacted and like a skating rink. 4 inches here around baltimore, up to 7 to 8 inches in western maryland. big snowfall in some parts of the mid-atlantic. take a look at the ice on the trees. we've had freezing rain or freezing drizzle since 5:00 yesterday. over 12 hours. we've got about a third of an inch of ice here. we've had some power outages, nothing too serious around baltimore. 3800 customers of pg&e but pepko and old dominion, two power companies that serve the area, the total combined up there around 31,000 customers without power. most of those here i

weather channel meteorologist mike seidel is in leesburg, virginia, about 30 miles outside of d.c. . we knew this was going to be a quick hitter. here in leesburg west of washington we had a four-hour window of snow. out here on route 7 the road was snow covered in a matter of minutes. now, we had salt down already because we had snow and ice over the weekend. they presalted, they plowed and now with the temperature at 34 late morning, we're looking very, very nice as far as getting around. all those schools are closed so that certainly helped the traffic this morning and people did stay home from work. on the ground here about 2 to 3 inches. we've had six-inch totals and we're going to see 2 to 4 inch totals as the snow continues to move into parts of the northeast. but new york city, philadelphia, baltimore, all those areas is a four-hour window. reagan national, dulles airport, about 100 flights were cancelled. most were cancelled before the storm hit so airlines are being very conservative. they're not slashing the afternoon schedule because they know this is over with and they

the weather channel's mike seidel joins me now to explain more on that. hat we're in for. >> hey, thomas. no snow for the ball drop in times square. it will be about 29 at midnight so it will be cold but not unusually cold. but we've got issues coming down at us from the north and west. first into the midwest with snow coming into chicago. we have an advisory up from 4:00 p.m. this afternoon until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we're looking at at least 3 to 4 inches of snow. it's going to be very powdery. at o'hare right now it's only 7 with a windchill 4 below zero. temperatures will come up overnight and by tomorrow morning will be up around 20. that snow will drop down towards kc and st. louis with a couple of inches possible for new year's day. there's the snow totals, maybe as much as a foot as they get lake-effect but generally around chicagoland we're talking about 5 or 6 inches of snow. then the storm comes out of the gulf of mexico. this is the one that will impact millions, whether you're driving or flying. it's coming up the coast thursday night

the weather channel's mike seidel is in leesburg, virginia, with more. ook at this. it is snowing like it won't quit. about an inch an hour right now. we're approaching two inches out here in leesburg. we're about 15 miles north and west of dulles airport. we're a good 45 minutes on a good day west of washington. this is a very dry powdery snow. just take your hand and wipe it off the car. it's like confectioner's sugar. the temperature is 27 degrees. look at the road here. this road was treated earlier. but it's snowing so hard it just adds up. now it's getting compacted. the real issue is not the snow for traveling. it is an issue, but as the temperatures aloft warm up, we're going to see the snow go to sleet and then ice. we could have a significant accumulation of ice, certainly from the shenandoah valley, from roanoke up to charlottesville right out here to north and west of washington and baltimore. that's going to stick on these tree branches. they'll stress out and come down, like we saw recently in dallas, oklahoma, and arkansas. we're likely goi

the weather now, perhaps more rain on the way, cold weather as well, here's the weather channel's mike seidel. >> final weekend of the year and the weather is going to start off nice in new york, washington, boston, temperatures in the 40s and 50s and dry saturday, but sunday a storm comes off the carolina coast. rides off the jersey shore east of cape cod on sunday night. that means rain this time. we don't have a lot of cold air to the north, so rain and that's going to impact airports. certainly after lunch time on sunday at laguardia, newark and kennedy. now sunday night we'll have enough cold air in the interior parts of maine and new hampshire where we will have enough snow to shovel and on the back side of the storm we may see a few snow showers on the tail end in the western boston suburbs and then on monday the cold air comes in. we're talking temperatures tumbling 22 buffalo, snows around the lakes, new york, city not bad, that's about average. actually a couple degrees above average for the last week of december. and then that arctic chill which is going to keep highs below zeros t
