weather channel meteorologist mike seidel is in snowy chicago tonight, hi, mike. >> reporter: hi there, from the navy pier here in chicago, and once again the snow flying. so far they've had more than 4 1/2 feet of snow this season, that's more they've shovelled in chicago in the past two winters combined. and cold morning, 15 so far sub zero has led to ice on the riverways and out here on lake michigan. in detroit, a record, last month 39 inches, more fell today leading to crashes on area highways in the motor city. another storm down south sunday brings more snow and ice in the dallas/ft. worth area, and from the d.c. area to new york city, right now we're looking at one to three inches in philly and new york. then a juicier storm in the midwest on tuesday. a swath of storms from chicago, to kc, and there will be mostly rains for the big city on wednesday, then more cold weather late next week. lester? >> outdoor first cold weather super bowl. what is it going to be like at kickoff in new jersey? >> reporter: lester, after all the worries of maybe a blizzard and icy cold weather, it'

let's go to mike seidel.e heard some reports of thunder mixed in in southern new england. >> reporter: there has been. we're out here in the low area. we wanted to get deep enough in the cold air aloft. we are looking for 8 to 12 inches out here. a little bit of snow on the ground from previous storms. it's been relatively comfy since late last week. we had temperatures in the 40s. on ground hog day on sunday, it was 55 degrees. logan, 40% of the flights have been canceled. about 40% of all departures have been scrubbed today. look at the radar, it's coming in like a wall of snow. over in nearby worcester their visibility went from no snow at all to heavy snow and a quarter mile. the snowfall rate will be one if not two inches an hour. it will ease off over lunchtime and then the sun will come back out tomorrow. bill, all schools in the area have been closed for today. >> yeah, i mean, you've been in this a million times. i would rather have all snow than get the snow and freezing rain. >> reporter: yeah. the

mike seidel from the weather channel is also up there.snow are you seeing and how deep is it? >> reporter: we've got plenty of snow, andrea. good afternoon from lowell. we're about 40 minutes or so northwest of boston. out here in the merrimack valley, we've got plenty of it. eight to nine inches on the ground. we've had eight inches fall in six hours. that's at least an inch an hour. it's very dry and powdery. the plows and bobcats have been going all around. got a couple gentlemen out here. they've been shoveling since about 6:00 a.m. this morning. they're working hard out there. the snowfall rate has backed off. one thing is for sure, andrea. look at that. the u.s. mail -- what are we paying now, 46 cents an ounce? it's moving today in lowell. not much else is moving. all the schools across massachusetts are closed. the governor said nonessential state employees stay home. logan airport, much like the new york city airport, not a whole lot happening. 52% of departures, 214 flights or so have been cancelled. all the hotels around the ai

and that is where mike seidel is standing by. greenville, south carolina. channel's mike seidel. >> reporter: hey, chris, good afternoon from greenville where it's still snowing. wet snow sticking to the trees and grass and car top, but out here at 385, we have no issues because the temperature is right around freezing. we are daylight. not showing particularly hard. one to two inches here. eastern north care karkacarolino five inches. but phase two impacting dallas/ft. worth. already four fatalities from auto crashes there. they have sleet and ice on the freeways. hundreds of accidents there. that part is going to come into the southeast and that will fire up the storm that goes up the east coast tomorrow night and thursday. and that is why we'll have all kinds of issues. but here in the upstate from greenville to charlotte, up towards greensboro and into d.c. and northeast, it will be primarily thouprim primarily snow. 6 to 10 inches. but down state, columbia, a augusta, parts of atlanta, we'll have a big ice storm. again, not all of atlanta will have an

meteorologist mike seidel is standing by. mike, are folks heeding the warning in, are they staying off the roads there in the upstate? >> they are, craig. it was basically a no turnout rush hour this morning here in greenville. schools are closed, very few businesses are open. we're going to try to find a restaurant today that's open. not many are. this is hayward road, they have treated this with salt and sand for traction, so this is slushed up. also, the snowfall has backed off. we've had about an inch so far. parts of the upstate have had three to four inches of snow. we're at 25 degrees. it's going to stay in the mid-20s and we have a long way to go. it's going to snow until probably 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow morning. we're forecasting six to ten inches of snow here. they've only had six of those since 1892, and if they get more than five inches of snow, it will be a top ten daily snowfall for february, so everybody's just kind of sitting tight, hanging loose, and glad that they are seeing snow instead of down state around co

let's bring in weather channel meteorologist mike seidel, because mike, it sure looks like february isf right where january ended with the windy city, right? >> it has. we have had 2 1/2 inches so far, looking for a storm total of 3 to 5 here in chicagoland. light snow now. we're at the lake front and as far as the eye can see, that's lake michigan in the foggy, snowy distance. and look at all of the ice. and this place is locked up. january was a tenth coldest on record. averaging 15.7 degrees. these records go back to 1872, and third snowiest. and with the over 2 inches of snow so far this morning, alex, they've had more snow this season than they had in the previous two seasons combined. there's the navy pier and although the ferris wheels are moving this morning, the merry go round at navy pier. the one thing going for us today, believe it or not, is temperature. it's about 30 degrees, about where we should be this time of year, after all the subzero mornings. they have had 15 mornings since december below zero, twice the average and more than subzero cold on monday. and another st

look at greenville, south carolina, we checked in with mike seidel yesterday. now they have blowing snow and at times whiteout conditions. conditions have gone downhill in north carolina, where the governor is urging the state's nearly 10 million residents to take the storm seriously. >> the next 48 hours are going to be tough in the carolinas, from the coast all the way to the mountains. as you know, this is the second major storm we have had in two weeks that has covered the carolinas, which is very rare. >> nbc's erica edwards is in the largest city. what's going on there? >> reporter: it is very cold and very windy. the snow is falling hard here in charlotte. we could get up to 8 inches, but the biggest worry is ice. we have been watching that ice storm as it moved up from atlanta into the carolinas. more than a quarter of a million people have been -- have lost power and could be out in the cold for days. officials are telling people to stay home today and tomorrow. we have seen a few cars stop on i-277, the main loop around eer of atlanta two weeks ago. t

. >> mike seidel is standing by for us in greenville, south carolina.e very strong language to talk about this storm. calling it, quote, mind boggling, if not historical. is that unusual? >> reporter: it is because of you how unusual this setup is down here in the south. we don't often get wintry weather and the setup is perfect for not only some ice, but a lot of ice. and you mentioned the area from atlanta along i-20, augusta, columbia, all the way up towards the raleigh area that band in there, somebody will get half an inch, maybe an inch of ice. that will paralyze the power grid and the area could be without power for days. the one good thing is as we get past this storm, most of the country will go into a very big warm-up next week. that will take an edge off the chilly weather after a very long cold and snowy winter for many. here in greenville up towards charlotte, up towards the roanoke area of virginia, we're looking for mostly snow, maybe some sleet. in fact 6 to 10 inches of snow, this could an top ten snowfall certainly in february here in

the weather channel's mike seidel is live in lowell, massachusetts, with the very latest there. >> oh >> reporter: aren't you glad you're in new jersey with an ice storm? maybe not. we're out here in lowell, northwest of boston. so far about 6 inches in about 4 1/2 hours, oeasily more than an inch an hour. one thing we don't have with this one is the wind. it is not bitterly cold. we've had so many storms this winter i've stood out and the temperatures have been in the teens and 20s and snow and subzero windchills. today, you know, it's bearable. it's 25 to 30 degrees. over at logan airport they've canceled about half their flights, 174 departures. pretty much the same across the board at the new york city airports. 45, 50% of all departures have been canceled and then hundreds of inbound flights in those areas. new york city, central park had 4 inches. went over to sleet and freezing rain. upstate in binghamton, new york, as much as a foot of snow. danbury, connecticut, has had 9 inches of snow and you get down to pennsylvania where we have now over 650,000 customers without power, e
