outside groups bankrolled both sides with ads like this one for incumbent mike simpson. but the club for growth pulled back and haven't aired a tv ad since april, even though they wanted to make this their signature challenge of the 2014 cycle. it's a sign that simpson's backers are feeling more comfortable today and it could be bad news for the tea party's bryan smith going into today's voting. meanwhile smith has been hammering simpson with ads calling him a liberal and accusing the incumbent of supporting a scheme to give amnesty to illegal aliens. well, i'm joined now by bryan smith. he's campaigning early this morning out there in idaho and joins me now on the phone. so, mr. smith, i want to ask you, you've labeled mike simpson a liberal. do you really think idaho republican voters think of mike simpson and think, boy, this is a guy that sides with barack obama. >> well, chuck, thanks for having me on your show. i can assure you as the idaho voters get informed about congressman simpson's voting record, more and more people do begin to see that he is just too liberal

you mentioned mike simpson in the house race. all these cases are where the establishment won over the tea party groups. how did they do it? they ran smart campaigns and got a lot of outside help. they spend $4 million to back the establishment candidates. we saw it play out in primaries in texas, north carolina and we'll see it play out as we continue into the primary calendar. what does it mean? you know, remember in 2010 and 2012, tea party candidates won big contests in the primaries. come november, they lost to the democrats. the republicans argue they lost five senate seats because of that. this time, things seem to be different. that can make the difference in november. here is the lay of the land. the democrats have a 55/45 majority in the u.s. senate. they are defending 21 of the 36 seats up for grabs in november. the establishment candidates winning the primaries, it gives the republicans better odds of recapturing the senate in november. guys? >> let's talk about kentucky. a number of races last night. everyone was foc

three tea party candidates lost in that race and in idaho, congressman mike simpson beat his tea partyhallenger 62% to 38%. six states held primaries yesterday, the first big day of voting in an important mid term season. the next is june 3 when voters head to the poles in eight states. here to discuss yesterday's results and how it will impact the november elections is jason johnson, political science professor who joins us from atlanta this morning. thanks for being with us. let's start with what you think the main takeaway is and did any of the races surprise you? >> not really. it was like a really, really close playoff game and then the defending champion wins anyway. i mean, most of the candidates that we expected to win actually ended up winning, no incumbents ended up losing their jobs, no huge surprises happened this super tuesday. i don't think the ground shifted that much despite how much money was spent on these early primary races. >> does the fact that mcconnell beat his challenger by a wide margin, 25 points, tell you anything about his prospects in november against alli

other races we are keeping an eye on, but they're is a primary challenge with congressman mike simpsons about that race? >> caller: a lot of people will be watching. again, those same narratives. again, a proxy war between the republican establishment and the endorsed candidate in bryan smith. this is a race that the club had said was sort of their best shot at prairie or congressman, but, you know, in recent weeks the club has gone off the air and directed a lot of their money toward the nebraska senate race. you know, since and is expected to win, but there was not any public polling in this race. it is still unclear if smith could pull this off. >> host: and finally, tarini parti, let's talk about arkansas. it was an uncontested primary. the republican candidate and democratic candidates seeking reelection. this, like kentucky, will be one of the most closely watched races in the country this year. >> caller: it is. it is one of those red states. so, you know, a lot of polls have shown him in the lead, but this race, again, just getting started. a lot of money will come in on both s
