nbc's mike taibbi is in bridgeville, pennsylvania, just outside pittsburgh tonight. mike, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. this may have been a year in the planning, a lonely bitter man brings a duffel bag stuffed with handguns and ammunition to a health club not to attack any one woman but shoot at a random group of women because of what he describes in a bitter, unusual blog, as decades are projection. 48-year-old had a job in a nice house in a quiet pittsburgh neighborhood. but he also had what police described as a building rage that exploded tuesday night. >> he just had a lot of hatred in him. gym members say he walked into an aerobics class at the l.a. fitness center some time around 8:15 tuesday night. one woman who was there told the today show he never said a word before pulling three of his four handguns out of his duffel bag. >> for a minute. and then a minute later, the lights go out. and then second later, you just hear shooting. and he is going, shooting all over the room. >> reporter: in all at least 36 shots were fired by a man who acco

nbc's mike taibbi is in bridgeville, pennsylvania, with more on this story. mike, good morning. >> good morning, in. in his revealing and rage-filled blog, sodini himself, the suspect, really set off enough warning signals to get the cavalry on his case. if anybody was reading it. no evidence at this point that anybody was reading it. turns out he also talked about his life and problems in videos he posted only youtube. the 48-year-old law firm systems analyst was cryptic in describing his life and what was wrong with it. >> it's easy for me to hide from my emotions for one more day. take a long drive in the car. listen to some music. daydream. or just do some mundane task around the house that really doesn't need to be done, that's not too important. and there you go. one more day, and one more day turns into one more year. >> reporter: neighbors say they found sodini's demeanor increasingly disturbing. >> he was kind of a reclusive person. so i'm not sure that i would pick up on him looking troubled. i kind of always thought he was a little, you know, differ

mike taibbi is there and joins us from boston. it's amazing. they were saying even last night at midnight there were 6,000 people still out on the streets. how many people seem to be out there this moment? >> a whole lot of people are here, carlos. they were estimating any given time, more than a thousand people were in line. it's more than that right now because the lines are much thicker as i look at them. yesterday, they say that 25,000 people came by to pay their respects. in fact, they extended the viewing until wijs to 1:30 in the morning for everybody in line. as much as three hours wait in the line. the wait here is about an hour but a steady stream of people coming in on a beautiful day in boston. blue skies and gentle breeze and bright sun. the kind of day the kennedys always loved. we're about three miles south of the city right now. this will go on until about 3:00 this afternoon unless it's extended and don't be if it is a bit if the crowd is legion the way they are right now. then, tonight, a memorial service at which many speaker

nbc's mike taibbi is in bridgeville with more. mike, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, lester. how are you? you know, it appears from studying the internet that george sodini spent many, many years examining his own increasingly unhappy life before spending the last year arming himself in the assault that he carried out tuesday night. just before the shooting started, police say he called his mother to tell her he was about to kill people, and expected to die himself. in videos posted on youtube, sodini had talked about what he wanted. >> my objective is to be real and to learn to be emotional and to, you know, to be able to emotionally connect with people. >> reporter: but he admitted that on any given day he hid from his emotions. >> and there you go. one more day. and one more day turns into one more year. >> reporter: finally, in the past year, he purchased at least three of his four handguns, and also bought magazines and amo for them from the same green bay, wisconsin who supplied the virginia tech gunman who killed 32

nbc's mike taibbi is in bridgeville, pennsylvania, with the latest. mike, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, meredith. well, there are continuing questions about who knew or might have known what was coming in his revealing and rage-filled blog, george sodini certainly sounded enough alarms over the past year to get the cavalry on his case, if anybody had read that blog. the problem, law enforcement still hasn't come up with anybody who knew what sodini was writing and planning. 48-year-old george sodini worked as a law firm systems analyst and had a nice house in a quiet pittsburgh neighborhood. but neighbors say he'd been neglecting his house lately and that his behavior, like sitting for long stretches in his driveway, was disturbing. how long was he sitting there? >> i don't know. we took one pass -- >> reporter: not in a chair on the driveway? >> yeah, yeah, just strange fellow. >> he was kind of a reclusive person so i'm not sure that i would pick up on him looking troubled. i kind of alws thought he was a little, you know, different

. >> mike taibbi with us, and we thank you so much. >>> and eugene robinson with us, whose article todayr being with us. i go back to gary will's book that focused on ted kennedy's doomed 1980 presidential campaign. he talked about ted kennedy the human, having to work in the city below with his brothers' eternal flame looking down on him. and wills kept writing through the book, it's hard being an american prince. you pick up on that this morning? >> it is. if you think about it, he was the prince. the youngest of nine children, and born into a dynasty. and he was a king. teddy's brother, jack, became king. joe, the oldest brother was supposed to be king, but he died in the war. bobby was supposed to be king after jack. you know, teddy was born in 1932, 15 years younger than jack. there was a huge separation. he was growing up, and his brother was a young man already. and so he was the baby boy who, it seemed to me, in 1980, was my first exposure to national politics at the democratic convention. the 1980 campaign, seemed to me, something that he felt obliged to do because of the family
