mike taibbi is among them in griffith park in l.a. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. it's been a busy and festive afternoon here at l.a.'s griffith observatory. the last chance to see this for another century. it started at 3:07 pacific time. though it's not technically an eclipse, you have to wear eclipse caliber eye protection to see it happen. it's not as dramatic as a lunar or solar eclipse. no suddenly darkened skies. or a ring of fire. a transit of venus shows itself as a distinct dark dot inching slowly across the face of the sun. it takes just under seven hours for the dot to move all the way across the sun. a phenomenon visible in the western hemisphere tonight with hawaii a prime viewing spot, and then moving across europe and the rest of the eastern hemisphere wednesday morning. nasa is live streaming the event for those who want to follow on screen. for hundreds of astronomy buffs donning these special glasses is the only way to go. >> it's a once in a lifetime feeling. >> there's purely scientific interest in

mike taibbi. nbc news, los angeles. >>> we're joined by weather channel meteorologist mike seidel in the middle of those historic floods in pensacola. mike, how are things there now? >> reporter: good evening, lester. we've picked up two more inches of rain. the area has been able to handle two more inches. 2308 -- following yesterday's rainfall. take a look at the forecast. this moisture will continue to flow out of the gulf of mexico. tropical downpours spreading into the southeast. the gulf of mexico is wide open for business. that cold front which is sparking some severe weather tonight in the midwest is going to spread the juice north. with the worst drought in the state of georgia, the area is going to get as much as two to three inches of rain. that's just what they need. not a drop of rain, with fires burning in five states. lighter winds will help firefighters. but with temperatures continuing average june warmth, and heat, and also low relative humidities of 5% to 15%, those are neither
