our report from our los angeles bureau tonight, nbc's mike taibbi. >> reporter: according to the casting call, it was supposed to be an historical adventure film. but when one person saw the film that led to such anger in the arab world, she was shocked. >> i am so sorry, there is no way to take anything back. i didn't know. i'm sure a lot of the actors didn't know. >> reporter: the video that came out of the studio east of los angeles, was not an adventure story. in fact, two actors on the film said the original spoken lines from the screen play were later dubbed over without their knowledge. the result that was unleashed in the trailer was a barrage against islam's customs and its prophet, muhammed. >> i can see any muslim to be upset, for example if you depict jesus in negative terms, many christians would be angry. >> reporter: cindy garcia said she called the producer to complain. but the self-described consultant and spokesperson for the film said sam bacile, who has not surfaced, is not the real name of the producer who came to him. >> and they knew that i would not back down and

mike taibbi has been following the story for us. mike, first of all, who are these filmmakers and have any of them said a whole lot about the violence that resulted in part from the film? >> actually, no, craig, they haven't said a whole lot.only person that's spoken is steven klein. let me tell you who they are. the person is a man named nakoula basseley nakoula. he is an egyptian born christian. and he wasn't arrested. he wasn't brought into custody actually, but he voluntarily agreed to answer questions. 2000 get past the media bob that's been outside his house, he disguised him in the way you sa saw. the others involved in the making of this video and the decision to turn what had been a film project into this toxic video include joseph nasoula, he has a charity and studio 25 miles east of where we are right now and one of the key show hosts on his television operation which is a web television, a web video operation, there's a guy named steven klein. steven klein is the ex-marine who has spoken out and spoken out, he's proud of

mike taibbi has been following this angle. he's live in los angeles with the very latest. o you, mike. what do you know about this? >> good morning, alex. this is not the man behind the video. it's not a film. it's a video. it's a 14-minute video. he's one of three men who is behind it and perhaps the least important. he has said to the associated press that he was only responsible for the logistics when the film was put together last summer. the summer of 2011. the people more responsible for the actual content, which has proven so toxic, are another fellow egyptian coptic christian, as this person is, nakoula is also an egyptian corn coptic christian, ultraconservative. this is joseph assuala who has been at anti-us lame ground zero mosque protests that you've seen in new york city. i was at the one two years ago when he was one of the featured speakers and also steve klein, a local insurance man who has written and railed about islam for years, and some of the same language and exploring some of the same themes that appeared in the actual dialogue that was dubbed over th

now reached 2,000, let's get to that developing news, nbc's tia abawi is in kabul, afghanistan, mike taibbi standing by. what happened with the latest attack. >> hi there, craig, well this occurred yesterday just west of the capital, kabul. it happened at a checkpoint on highway 1, apparently a new checkpoint where americans were there apparently training afghan security forces there were american service members as well as contractors at that checkpoint. there were approached by afghan soldiers, apparently a conversation ensued and then an afghan soldier then fired at the americans, killing one of the service members and a contractor. a contractor that was there to train the afghan security forces. the americans then fired back at the afghans, killing at least three of them this makes it the 38th insider attack that we've seen in afghanistan this year alone. killing at least 53 coalition service members and contractors, as well. this is a disturbing trend that we've seen this year. considering back in 2007, we only saw two such attacks. and it's eroding the trust between the afghan soldier
