on lake michigan where the coast guard has been hard at work breaking through some of that ice, mike tobinon that now. hey, mike. >> reporter: and bill, i don't know how well you can see through the driving snow here, but this frozen tundra behind me, this is lake michigan. in the rare case that it freezes up like this, shipping locks up as well. so the nation depends on the ice breakers with the u.s. coast guard. with ice on the great lakes nearing record levels, the crew of the ice breaker biscayne bay finds the call of duty as far south as chicago for the first time in their careers with the coast guard. you can see it from the satellites. the great lakes are nearly 80% frozen. >> usually the normal tugs can handle the ice. this year it's getting a little too thick for them, so the coast guard had to bring an ice breaker down to help. >> reporter: ice is broken by the weight of the cutter, from air bubbled out of the hull. even the wake is often enough to create a shipping lane. what we're into now is called wind roads. this is where the wind has driven the ice to stack up on itself. it

it is not stopping mike tobin on the road in indiana braving a nasty winter storm. u, mike? >> we're in northwest indiana, on i-65 headed northbound. i should be able to show you and headed north to look at the external camera, a remnants of a big wreck, pileup of four semi-tractor trailers that jackknifed jackknifed in the northbound lane going fast in the slick conditions. the good news about this, there wasn't much in the way of injuries. two people were injured. nothing that serious. what you have is what you see here, all of this snarled traffic. seems worst of the weather passed at least this area. the southbound lanes are pretty clear. it was been pretty slow in the northbound lanes. there is still a lot of snow on the road and the road itself is pretty slick. not as bad as the airports. 400 flights canceled out of o'hare and midway. that will snarl everybody else. another complicating factor is salt. the winter has been so brutal that everybody has eaten into the stockpiles of salt, all municipalities. as we look at external camera you see one car off the roa

mike tobin on the move. >> reporter: bill what i want to draw your attention to is not the lanes of trafficll the way over the median those are the now lanes and traffic is moving slow because of a pile up of four tractor trailers and jack-knifed have been cleared, a few of the lanes. moments i- 65 now was closed ten miles deep. and again, they are four trailers that were traveling fast and jack knifed and piled up. the bad news people go snarled. and good news, not much in the way of injuries. two injured. transportation is the difficulty of the day. mostly trucks moving. i don't see a lot of civilian or passenger cars like that one in the foreground coming this way. and we start to look at air travel. right now between o'hare and midway airport. more than 400 flights are cancelled and you know the rule of them. as o'hare goes and chicago goes, the rest of the country slows down because of connecting flights. word to the wise. call ahead and check the internet. most of the snow has calmed down and we have a lot of wind and drifting. we'll get back to the highways and runways in the airport

mike tobin live, what's the latest? whose car he hijacked he wanted to get as far away from michigan as possible. but when he was apprehended he was 10 miles from the state line. armed with a hammer and box cutter he hijacked a woman a short distance from the prison which he escaped, drove into indiana. when they stopped for gas, she made a break and called 911 from a cell phone she had stashed away. shortly after that elliot dumped the jeep he had stolen from the woman. he switched out cars. according to sheriff's deputies the monte carlo was reported stolen. the alert went out. a short time after, sheriff's deputies caught the video. there was a short chase but they threw something called stop sticks out and they apprehended elliot. >> right there, one of them, and the deputy came from behind, pulled him out and took him to the ground and put him in handcuffs. it worked out great. everybody came together and we got the job done. >> elliot escaped from maximum security prison in ionnia sunday after authorities say he g

. >> mike tobin, thanks. >>> let's bring in janice dean the weather machine in the extreme fox weatherun its course this one? >> it's almost done and we watch what happens on the weekend. but as you mentioned over a foot of snow in some cases i heard unofficially 19 inches of snow across the poconos. there's the evolution of the storm that brought over a foot of snow across the central u.s. a lot of gulf moisture as well and then across the northeast we're almost done, but the freezing rain and/or sleet that's left on the roadways in new jersey, long island, up towards connecticut, is going to stay in place and we're going to see a freezing period overnight. in terms of snow we could see a couple more inches upstate new york and new england, but shepard, look at these temperatures overnight. 17 in new york, 11 in harrisburg, single digits, teens, 20s. anything on the ground that's wet is going to freeze and we'll have a new set of problems tomorrow heading into work and on the power lines and the temperatures are going to be below freezing for the next several days across the northeast
