south carolina governor nikki haley will campaign with walker on june 1st and mike huckabee, you know, the guy who's got a show over on fox and nationally syndicated talk show, he actually has a pac. i didn't know that. and he is raising money for walker. hey, phil, can i have a pac? probably not. i work for a news organization. i'm joined tonight by john nichols, washington correspondent of "the nation" magazine and author of the book "uprising." john, where is the race right now? how tight is it? >> it's a tight race, ed. when i talk to democrats and republicans, they tell me that all of their internal polling shows that this race is close and in most instances, getting closer. as you see, that movement among independents, toward tom barrett. and i've seen it physically around the state. this afternoon, i was in scott walker's hometown of delvim, wisconsin, and in front of the big old bed and breakfast, in downtown delvim, there's a huge recall walker barn. so even in his hometown, people are feeling quite confident in saying they don't want him. >> john, what about the commercials?

bill: what i understand, mike from 18 months ago is that walker won that battle.but he won that. what did the primary tell us if anything about which side is more motivated than the other. >> reporter: governor walker had a primary opponent. he was a proceed pest candidate not taken very seriously. 630,000 wisconsin republicans turned out to vote yesterday just to prevent a fluke. now you compare that to the total number of democrats who turned out for faulk and barrett and it's about 10,000 less than those who turned out on the republican side. wisconsin republicans say that means they have a better ground game, a more motivated base. the democrats say all they really care about is getting walker out of office, they'll turn out june the 5th, that's when it counts, bill. bill: mike, thank you. you're going to be in wisconsin for a month. we'll see what gives them. patti ann: mitt romney and president obama neck-and-neck in most states. ed rollins who helped ronald reagan win re-election in 1984 will tell us what two states will make the difference. bill: new alleg

candidates facing off in a primary for the right to challenge republican governor scott walker in a recall election on june 5th. mikelwaukee with more on this story. mike, we said five candidates. any indications on who the candidate will be, the candidate? >> reporter: well, wisconsin republicans are operating on the idea that when all the ballots are counted today the candidate governor walker will face is milwaukee meijer tom barrett. he is seen as the establishment democrat. when the conservative groups are putting out their attack ads they are pinpointing mayor barrett. >> they are focusing exclusively on me because they know he can't defend his record on jobs. >> reporter: the other top democrat is kathleen faulk. she's been a one issue candidate promising to repeal changes that governor walker made to collective bargaining. she generally trails by double digits in the polls, jenna. jenna: you had a front row seat to all the bitter passion that involved wisconsin. now that you're back does it seemed like it has calmed down a little bit? do you see a shift in the public right now, or is it more of the same? >>

scott walker wind hig lead over tom barrett, 7 points, said to be within the margin of error. mikeive in milwaukee, wisconsin. less than a week to go, what does governor walker say about the numbers? >> the walker camp is very happy with the numbers. he has a 4% margin of error. that puts walker going into tonight's final debate with a lot of momentum in his corner. he's bolstered by recent job numbers that the walker camp pushed out a little bit early. since governor walker put his reforms into place wisconsin was down some 33,000 jobs. what they did was add on the most recent quarter, which shows a dramatic turn around and puts wisconsin up 27,000 jobs. mayor barrett's campaign says those numbers were dubious, only pushed out in front for political gain and had yet to be confirmed. a memo from the department of workforce development confirms those numbers. that bolsters walker, it makes it tough for barrett going into a final debate. fundraising numbers are showing that walker is dominating barrett in terms of raising money, seven to one. bill: what has happened to the union memb

congressman mike coffman is now changing his excuse for attacking the president. >> i misspoke and apologize. >> scott walker is going national to survive his recall. mr. barrett joins me tonight. >> good to have you with us. thanks for watching. president bush famously asked the question, are our children learning? mitt romney, are we making enough money off them? mitt romney visits a charter school about success of for profit education. >> i'm told about the success of these institutions you helped found and this institution in particular and would love to get your privilege on what makes it work. >> there are real questions about whether charter schools are working including the one romney visited today. the universal blu ford charter school in philadelphia was put on warning status last year. only 27% proficient in math and 22% proficient in reading. the objectives or 72% in reading and they are behind. romney told the audience classroom size, it has nothing to do with school performance. the teachers he spoke with today took issue with romney's logic. >> i can't think of any teacher in the whole time i'

mike, what do you think? what happens in wisconsin, will it affect other states' chances to get their budgets under control? >> i do and i think walkers winning the battle, david, even the democrats that are lining up to run against him are not bringing up the union negotiations, as the same point, they talk about as rick says, jobs. why? they know the public steadfastly sees the evidence and that walker saved them a lot of money from taxes and, by the way, armageddon the unions talked about in terms of lost teachers' jobs and lost police jobs never happened and in fact he saved a lot of jobs and democrats should shift the focus of the debate. >> david: victoria to e-mac's point, look at indiana, for example, they put restrictions on public sector unions that some people say are more onerous than what was -- >> oh, yeah. >> david: and they are doing well, indiana took a lot of jobs away from illinois. >> oh, yeah. i agree with that entirely. what was hillary clinton's line about, you know, cease the opportunity of crisis? that has happened here, in states, and my concern is that its will be rolled back, when we are just in the middle

as mike suggested, republicans and conservatives from around the country have been all in on this, on principle and on backing scott walkerally. democrats have been more divided. you've seen reports of questions about how much is the president going to invest in this, how much is the democratic party going to invest. i think they are going have to have one more push. if they do come up short, it really will be a huge psychological boost for republicans not just in wisconsin but on standing up for some of the things that scott walker has fought for and where he's drawn lines. >> and notice the white house and the re-election committee in chicago have stayed away from wisconsin. they have done these big ad buys. they picked their nine states. wisconsin not on that list. and the reason was because they wanted to wait and see how this turned out. you know, they have been keeping a distance from it. and it is trending in this direction, and it keeps them even further distance. >> they are not going to double down. >> so who made this decision, really quickly, before we go to break? what union made this decision that they would
