. >> it's called loving and true story of richard and mildred long inter rational couple sentenced to prison in 59 h 19 5 forgetting married. kevin mccarthy is live at the museum with more. what an honor to do this story. >> as an absolute honor to be here laura, sarah, in washington d.c. is movie is very, very monumental and historic and for people who don't know the story line on june 2, 195 mildred and richard loving drove to washington d.c. d.c. because at that time 24 states barred interracial marriage they went back to virginia where they were then arrested and they were charged with 25 year ban and they're not allowed to be in the state of virginia for the same time for 25 years. they moved back to washington d.c. mildred did not want to raise her children there they took the case to the supreme court and in 1967 supreme court changed marriage forever. so it's a very historical story and now hollywood has taken on the movie and the premiere is happening tonight historical as well. great thing is the cast will be here, joel edgeton jeff nickels director this is first theatrical

really, it was a pleasure and a privilege playing mildred. >> this case went all the way to the supremert, as i mentioned. 1967. the courts ruled in favor of the lovings. what from your own background did you take in relating to what happened, a world away, i'm sure, here in the states in studying this case? >> well, you know, on a most basic level, i'm a mixed race myself. so it resonated with me for those reasons. the fact i could be considered, my status would be considered invalid because one was white and one was black struck a chord with me very deeply and i think marriage equality is a question at the moment because i think it's just wrong to feel that you can dictate or legislate or even have an opinion, and the folly of that. and the story brings that back home. >> it's also powerful that here is mildred, as described by "vogue" this unwitting writer of history's wrong. she was not like a dr. martin luther king who took on the mantle and said this is my call to life. this was just about the loving being in love. >> yes. they were a couple who achieved something extraordinary. b
