this happened, in the the preserve in west milford in passaic county. tony from our sister station wcbs tells us what happened. >> they are skiddish they will runaway. >> reporter: robert is shocked to hear what happened behind his home in the preserve in northern passaic county. west milford police say five adults went for a hike on the last sunday of summer but only four made it out alive. 22-year old dorris path pathel was mauled to death the by a black bear. >> from what i'm told there has been very few bear attacks, and i don't think there has ever been a fatality. >> reporter: surviving hikers told investigators they encounter the bear and it began to follow them. they grew frightened and ran. the hiker may have twisted his angle and fallen and became separated from the others. when survivors got to safety they called police. the west milford search and rescue found patel dead a black bear nearby the bear was euthanized. >> the bear had been brought to the state laboratory for a full necropsy to make sure this was the animal involve in the attack
