i know you're eager to get back to your city. >> thank you, milissa. >> milissa, thank you so much. both milissa and the mayor talking about the fact that if this is an e-5, they have only seen that in 1999. today's track was 20 miles long and the tornado itself a mile wide. we're joined by todd and jennifer tabor who were evacuated from their home in moore, oklahoma, and cannot get back to their neighborhood. thank you for being with me. explain where you are in proximity to your house. what do you know about your home or your neighborhood? >> we don't know anything right now. they've got the road blocked off behind us. we are trying to get to whatever power lines that are down and gas fixed so we can get back into our neighborhood to see what damage there is and if we can help out in any way. >> jennifer, at what point or time did you and todd know that you needed to get out? was it based on tv reports? someone calling you? how did you know to get out in time? >> well, i was watching the tv reports and i was watching out the window, i could see it coming towards our house as we we

my colleague, milissa rehberger, is in the newsroom. milissa is a native of oklahoma. guess this is a reminder of that infamous event on may 3rd, 1999. >> you know, it really is. i lived there for about three or four years and it was during that time. this is the same exact path, martin. moore, oklahoma, i covered that storm. moore, oklahoma, was leveled. i can't emphasize enough. this is a very heavily populated area full of subdivisions and schools and churches and malls and things like that. it is packed. moore got hit so badly during that infamous tornado on may 3rd so many years ago and that's where a majority of the people died. you hear the e perts talking about an ef-4, ef-5. that's 160 to 200 mile per hour circulating winds. the only way to hide from something like that is underground. >> yeah. >> back then i spoke with a man who survived, i kid you not, by hugging his toilet which was the smart thing to do. he had nowhere else to go. had no basement, no storm shelter. the pipes went into the ground. that is how he survived. there was nothing left of his home.

i'm grateful to you, milissa. don't move, though. we're going to join brian norcross now, who's a meteorologist for the weather channel. bryan, just tell us how this particularly devastating tornado cut itself swath through that area. >> it was incredible to see as it was happening, we were monitoring it here and watching it and broadcasting it here on the weather channel. this was reminiscent of what happened in 1999. the tornado that really reformed moore, oklahoma, there, and obviously you see the damage and you've been showing the damage on the south side of moore. this is a little different part of the city. moore being a suburb of southern oklahoma city. south of downtown oklahoma city. so this was on the south side of moore where the 1999 tornado was a little farther to the north. the conditions coming together perfectly to form this absolutely spectacularly intense kind of a perfect tornado, the kind you just hate to see, you know, when we see these things come together. as you say, winds almost certainly 200 miles per hour.

let me go to milissa right now. she covered tornadoes in the oklahoma city area. i'm trying to figure out what we have facing us later tonight, milissa. >> it's going to be a long, tedious, and very scary effort, chris. if they have not turned off the power to the area, there are power lines down that might still be live. there is the fear of gas leaks, the fear of fires and just general danger within that debris. they've got about two more hours, maybe 2 1/2 more hours of light there, which is going to make this a very dangerous job for the brave men and women. they are very meticulously picking through that and it must be so hard for them. you know they just want to rush in. but you can't. it's just too dangerous. so night will fall, it will get cold and it will be very lonely and very scary for anybody who is alive in any of this rubble. >> what is the temperature down there right now? what is it expected to reach overnight? >> well, it could be very cold. if you're stuck under there, 40s, 50s. it's like here this time of year. you never know what you're going

one more thing, milissa, the transportation director is asking folks coming down i-35 to try to find, if they don't need to come through this stretch of moore, find other ways. it is really hampering people trying to get in and out of the area. back to you. >> that is all incredibly relieving news, i'm sure for all those homeowners. to know they're being taken care of. today we got a new look at an area moore that had been previously closed to the media. tell us what you're seeing there. >> reporter: pretty much the same. just widespread devastation. one of the good news that has come out of the past couple days is the fact that they lowered the number of homes destroyed to about 1,000. 1,100, 1,200 from 12,000 to 13,000. that's good news. one of the homeowners who lost his home moved here from denver. he said he will probably go back. he just cannot accept, he is not ready to accept that he's lost everything here. take a listen to what he had to say. >> it is hard to comprehend. i'm staying with my niece and nephew. and we'll talk about something and i'm thinking, yeah, mine is out i
