miller. as one of the world's leading experts on this individual, his career, experience in world war ii, but the way he -- we remember him, and perhaps the things we have forgotten about him -- i wonder if you can start with the basic question. tell our audience who he is. tell us about his name. if you would be willing to talk about that? >> doris miller was the grandson of enslaved people, of sharecroppers, the third son of connery and henrietta miller. he was born close to waco, texas in 1919. as far as the name, there are theories as to how he got it. a man called doris, it is unusual. some suggest his mother was so keen to have a daughter that she kept the name she intended for her daughter for her son. i have heard henrietta miller, his mother, insisted it was a name that can go either way, boy or girl. some people suggest when he came to prominence after pearl harbor, it was a misprint, turning doris into dorie. but there was another deal where maybe the navy or the press did not want

miller brewing was founded by frederick miller who arrived here from germany. he was born in 1824 in southern germany which is still a center of your culture. he came here with 9000 dollars in gold on his person. he kind of looked around and milwaukee emerged as a kind of obvious choice. a lot of reasons for that. there's a lot of good farmland around here. there's barley and hops, which are two ingredients in beer. you also had troop winters. time, s done mechanically and that was done -- that was important to keep ice-cold during the long selling season. the most important reason to settle here was this was the most german city in america. you have that german triangle of milwaukee, cincinnati and st. louis. all three became brewing centers. by 1860, milwaukee had a majority of germans in its population. you have a lot of taste for beer here and a lot of talent for making it. we set up shop and what was called the plank road brewery, which is just behind me. the watertown plank road which went from milwaukee up about 60 miles from here. it had been started a
