milley: you asked about the replenishment. the u.s. military as an entity, all of the various munitions packages we have come the secretary has us looking at those closely to make sure we do not drop below levels that become high-risk. right now the risk to ourselves is relatively low. it is not something we will get overly excited about. we have a category called critical munitions. we are solid in all of those. javelins are not in that category. your small arms, your antitank weapons, some of the javelins, as opposed to other smart munitions. we are ok. we are doing ok and our risk is being managed appropriately. with respect to the training, we are doing training in several different countries. along with nato and partner countries we are trading ukrainians. i will not go into all of the details. not in ukraine but outside of ukraine. united states does not have any trainers in ukraine. some of the things that may have been in the media, those are planning efforts underway at a relatively low level have not yet made it into the secr

general milley. i think you and secretary austin said last year that we could expect in the next two to three years threats of the american homeland emerge from afghanistan. is that still accurate? >> i still believe that to be a correct assessment. >> has it moved one way or the other? >> we are seeing initial indications as you have seen in the media as well and you are privy to some of the intelligence -- isis and other groups are trying to put themselves back together, they have not succeeded yet and they have not presented a threat to the u.s. homeland. what we are watching that very closely. if they raise their head and do present a threat, then we'll take appropriate action. >> is our capability to monitor afghanistan sufficient? >> i think we have room to improve. >> our isr presence in afghanistan i think you'll be shocked to know what it is and where it's headed. to both of you, you advocated for troops to remain in afghanistan, is that correct? >> it is the president's decision, but that w

and in your book, you write general milley actually had an agreement with the other members of the jointilitary commanders in the country to all resign if president trump tried to use the military to stop the transfer of power. you write about personally being concerned that that is what he was trying to do. so you saw evidence, or you had good reason to believe, there was an attempt here to basically stage a coup? >> i had a lot of concern about what might or might not happen in the months leading up to the election, right? there was talk about conducting strikes -- military strikes against other countries. the president, through the summer, was talking about sending troops into seattle and portland, and i write about in the final days i had this private meeting with the head of the national guard and general milley and i talk about what might or might not happen the day after the election, concerned there may be the use of the military to somehow influence the outcome. there is criticism why i didn't speak up, and it is because i wanted to be there on the spot to be a circuit breaker.

four weeks since even before the invasion, secretary of defense, lloyd austin and general mark milleybeen trying to get their russian counterparts on the phone, and the russians have not been responding or willing to set up a phone call. now we know that secretary austin was able to connect with russian defense minister shoeu tkpwaou today. secretary austin urged his russian counterpart to engage in a cease-fire to talk about negotiations and he urged him to keep open lines of communication, so to, in fact, take his calls in the future. there still have been no communications between general milley and his russian counterpart, and that's critical for two reasons. one is the two of them were known to speak relatively frequently before the russian invasion of ukraine, and in addition to that, it's particularly telling given the reports just recently that the general was forwarded in a town in ukraine and may have injured. that's something the pentagon has not been able to confirm, and they are not sure if he was injured and how significant it was. but, again, there has been a break thro

if milley was there, i was there. were you at all trying to limit your facetime with the president? >> no, not at all. i thought it was important to engage with the president to give him my best advice and recommendations. >> bret: you were very critical to former ambassador to germany ric grenell. he tweets that mark he is officer is one of the most duplicitous people i ever met in politics. he comfortably lies anyone hiring him should know this. one example he told me to my face multiple times moving 10,000 troops out of germany and puttings some in poland and other places was a good idea. true? >> i do believe we should put more troops in poland. i do not believe in the precipitous withdrawal in the way its ha handled moving troops out of germany. that's why at the end of the day as i write in my book we did move troops in poland. i proposed to move troops in romania and bulgaria. >> absolutely, were you for the effort to take out soleimani? >> yes, the president made a bold decision soleimanis with s. a terrorist

i had good support from general mark milley. >> for more on this, our correspondent is joining us nowf shocking claims made in that one clip. what more are you learning? >> there are more clips like that. we knew mark esper had a troubled relationship, especially toward the end with his commander in chief, former donald trump. now we're getting a better sense of that. here are some of the ideas, some of the, quote, crazy ideas he says he had to push back upon. one of them was when according to this book, a sacred oath, trump suggested firing missiles into mexico to destroy drug labs. we know more about that. a few days earlier he told "the new york times" trump reported that trump suggested firing patriot missiles, quote, quietly. trump also considered deploying 10,000 active duty troops to the streets of district of columbia in response to protests in the summer of 2020. a few months before the election. according to the book, and according to the statements he made to 60 minutes, trump had also suggested shooting protesters following the death of george floyd. >> i want to play the

when i and general milley and others arrived monday morning, he was in a tirade, if you will, about whate streets. we began talking about the insurrection act, possible deployment of 10,000 active duty streets to the capital and the president raises this prospect, asks to general mark milley, can't you shoot them in the legs or something? i think we were all taken aback by that. nobody said anything, that i can recall, in direct response. it hung there. i was quite taken aback. we originally got back to at least what i continued to push, all of us was this is a law enforcement action. if there's any role for the military, it's national guard in support of law enforcement. this is what i grew up in with the military. i served in the national guard. that's what we kept pushing, was that the -- while there was violence and unrest, it wasn't as bad as the president thought. we thought law enforcement could handle it. my view was that the purpose was really to give americans the right to protest the tragic murder of george floyd. >> we did see the national guard, the images on the lincoln mem

lloyd austin and general mark milley will be briefing reporters on the war in ukraine.ace some questions about president biden's statement that he would use military, u.s. military to defend taijuan if china invades. let's go to the pentagon. barbara starr is standing by. barbara, what are you hearing there? >> reporter: kate, good morning. austin and milley rarely come out to talk to the news media so it's a big deal that they will have a press conference today on camera an hour from now. why are they doing it today? well, they have had a three -- they just finished a three-hour virtual meeting with military and defense representatives from 44 countries to talk about the situation in ukraine. you'll remember, just about a month ago, they met in person to talk about aid to ukraine, military weapons to ukraine and what alliance could do to support the war defense against russian aggression. now a virtual meeting of 44 countries to carry it one step further. they began by talking about the situation on the ground and as for taijuan, fair to say they may well get questions

in a pentagon briefing today, general mark milley and defense secretary lloyd austin declined to saypport sending u.s. troops to taiwan? >> i will render my advice at the moment in time to the president. and the secretary of defense. >> is the u.s. making a commitment by saying that they're willing to defend them militarily for u.s. troops to be involved in that military response? >> again, i think the president was clear on the fact that the policy has not changed. >> let's bring in democratic senator chris murphy of ke connecticut. you heard general milley and secretary austin in that clip reluctant to answer the question, speaking to how sensitive the issue is. are you surprised president biden went as far as he did today? >> well, i think i'll be interested to hear from the administration this week as to whether our policy has changed. our policy has been the same since 1979, which has been that we're going to help taiwan defend itself, and we're going to leave open the question of whether the united states would come to the defense of taiwan. obviously, you can't put u.s. troops

and i think general milley feels the same way, as well. what do you say, mark esper, to those who look at what happened that day, what the president was suggesting, and say you should have spoken up at that moment, and y should have even resigned your position? >> boy. look, it's i's a great comment. and i wrestled with this constantly about what to do. and you've got to keep in mind the context, because it always matters. it was in the in the weeks and months leading up to this that other proposals were put forward, such as shooting missiles into mexico, the deployment of a quarter million troops to the border, possible strikes against venezuela. and each of these i was able, with with the help of others at times, to to kind of push back on. and my view was that, look, i thought i was serving the country better by staying in the job than by resigning. and then, of course, i had no idea who he would put in behind me. and that was my bigger concern, was, would the president put in an uber loyalist who would really carry out these ideas that

the chairman of the joint chiefs, general milley says that this conflict, this war will be measured in years, so how far, how high are the projections for gas prices. we heard from our own richard quest, it could go up to $4.80, what are your projections. >> this is a really great question. we don't know how long the war is going to go on. we do know we have the ability to increase supply. our energy information agency has predicted that u.s. oil and gas companies will increase their supply to about a million barrels per day increases by the end of this year. that should start to even things out. honestly, the amount of oil per day that has been pulled off of the market is closer to 2 to 3 million barrels per day, so there's still an amount to make up. we're calling upon our allies, canada has said they will increase to the tune of another 200,000 barrels per day. brazil has said the same thing, so while we've got to increase supply, we know that the war is still going to be affecting the price per barrel, and ultimately, victor, the most important thing we can do is to continue to acc
