this idea goes back to the milton friedman who proposed it 50 years ago. this idea is so old that it was the topic of the year of the debate team in my senior year in college. i have debated both sides of this and i think it's still a lousy idea. the reason is it's not just that it creates inefficiency and all that, it takes away dignity. i believe we may have to think about heavily subsidizing the work of many people whose jobs can be overcome by automation. within five years, it's possible the trucking industry would disappear. there are going to be self-driving trucks and we are going to have thousands of people out of a job. i think what we are going to end up doing is not a guaranteed income where you sit around in colorado and smoke dope all day. but do try to find a way to subsidize employment, even in the face of automation, so that humans can be competitive with machines. otherwise you're going to have a population living on the dole, large population. it will only have eight corrosive effect. >> bill: is it too shallow to think new technology won
