the theft was confirmed by a security firm in milwaukee working for its clients. this is a major flaw in internet security. long known by experts but still not addressed. joining me now is nbc justice correspondent pete williams. this is different than the target theft. it's not your credit cards but it is your passwords and it is showing a big flaw on the internet. >> right. it's different from the target breach because target was very careful to attack that website and the way it worked with the retail point of sale. this is a technology to steal data out of websites that has been around for a decade. part of the lessons here is that most websites do a pretty poor job of security. if they can't defend themselves against a known enemy that has been out there for a decade. that's point one. point two is, the milwaukee firm that discovered this, so far this russian gang that has this information is not using the user name and passwords to ex employed people's personal information and steal their identities instead of selling the ec-mails, sort of a marketig thing t
