in milwaukee, all of the absentee ballots are counted centrally at one location. that does not happen until after polls close at 8:00 p.m. so milwaukee totals 10 to come in late, absentee ballots often added to the statewide totals after midnight. that was true in 2020 and also true in 2018. that is a city that bows predominately democratic, at least 70% of votes will be for democratic candidates. viewers should not be surprised if lane the evening republican candidates appear to be doing better than expected and once milwaukee as those ballots to the total is ships things back to where things will finally end up. places to watch i think one thing to watch is voter turnout. the marquette lawful, the gold standard survey in the state suggests republicans have the upper hand when turnout is lower. barnes may be trailing by five to six points in the lower turnout scenario but turnout is higher approaching the total number of registered voters then it is probably a tossup. democrats are counting on a late start of turnout. there is same-day voter registration in wisco

we've got shaquille brewster on duty in milwaukee. he's at the headquarters for the republican in the race tim michels. hi, shaq. >> hi there. good evening. and you know, polls just closed about a half hour ago, so there's still a lot of vote to come in. but i've been talking with both campaigns, both party chairs, and it's almost as if they're reading from the same script. they say they're feeling cautiously optimistic. republicans saying they're seeing high turnout in their high population areas. democrats saying they see high turnout and long lines in areas like dane county and milwaukee county and they both say it was the issues that drove their voters to the polls. and look, in wisconsin all that can be true at once. this is a 50-50 state. if you look at the turnout, in the past couple of statewide elections, 2020, 2016, 2018, you saw the electoral margins all under 25,000 votes. both sides understand that this is going to come out to that election day turnout and who's able to edge out the other at the end of the day. and as we

of the milwaukee elections commission. and apparently it was an attempt to expose the vulnerability in the state's election law. we heard from the mayor that the deputy director of milwaukee election commission fraudulently requested military ballots using a state website, the mayor suggesting she did this in here own time, did this privately not while working, but sent those ballots to a republican state lawmakers who has been trying to expose this vulnerability in state law and who has cast doubt on the 2020 election. so, we don't know the political affiliation of this state of this milwaukee election official, who is now fired, but she sent these ballots to a republican state lawmaker, essentially trying to prove a point. the d.a.'s office said that this is a criminal investigation at this point, that charges are likely to be filed in the future. she has since been fired. the mayor was strong in her comments saying this was a breach of trust. as soon as they found out, she was fired, her access to elections systems were

we have the latest from milwaukee. grady trimble. >> progressive candidate mandela barnes is spending a lot of time in milwaukee trying to get out the urban vote. he will be here with senator cory booker this morning. but the state's largest city has seen a big spike in crime in the past few years particularly homicides and carjackings. barnes during that time has been linked to the defund the police movement, which he has since tried to backtrack on. in a 2020 interview he suggested reallocating money from, quote, overbloated police budgets and before that as a state lawmaker barnes voted to end cash bail. >> as much as he dishonestly denies it, he is the leader of the defund police movement. he is supported by the leaders of that movement. he used the code words. says it pains him to see a police budget. >> homicides in milwaukee have gone up each of the last three years. they are up 91% from 2019 to 2021 making crime a top issue in the governor's race, too. >> we're going to have strong leadership that will stand wi

milwaukee county is 70% for barnes.ties for him to really cut deep into that johnson lead. there is also remaining vote in some of these to urban counties outside of milwaukee, scattered remaining vote, the smaller red counties throughout the state, there are also opportunities for johnson as well. but just an extremely tight senate race -- to remind you, wisconsin in 2020, the margin of the presidential race with joe biden by 20,000 votes. and the margin in wisconsin in the 2016 race was 20,000 the other way for donald trump. so, this is kind of converging where these wisconsin races tend to converge. very last-minute, very -- is one is crucial because republicans, given the loss they have absorbed in pennsylvania, really just cannot afford a second senate race. they desperately need ron johnson to hang on to this lead in wisconsin. the other place where it is extraordinary close, and we've been following all night, is in georgia. 95% now. the difference is about 21,000 votes between warnock and walker. now to give you

there are a lot of suburban women in that area, around the suburbs of milwaukee. of ken nobody that had riots. usually democrat voters down there, but they have trended republican because of the crime issue. then the economy across the stated but northern part, people drive a long way, this used to be my old district, dark blue area that trended really red. the economy is killing them. they're driving long distances often times in pickups and suvs because they work better in the snow. they're getting crushed. i look at this, wisconsin, specifically it will be a good night for republicans and grady mentioned madison and milwaukee, he is right, a lot of voters there, but what a lot of democrats and pollsters forget about, there is a big state out there, there is a lot of rural voters. when you take them in small bunch they look really small, when you put them together it's a massive voting block that matters in the state. that's why i think those rural voters, the state usually was kind of a blue trending state. now you will see it is kind of purple because the uppe

what about this milwaukee elections official?anderson, so this was the deputy director of the milwaukee commission, kimberly zapata. she allegedly got military ballots for fake voters through a public site called my vote and sent them to a republican state lawmaker. that state representative said that these ballots were all addressed to a woman named holly with different last names, someone who did not and had never lived at this particular address. and while the specific motive isn't known at this point, the executive director of the milwaukee election commission says she believes this since fired deputy was trying to point out that you could go to a public site, make someone up and still request a ballot. this representative turned everything over to law enforcement, who has now turned things over to the district attorney's office, who now say they expect to file charges in the coming days. i should also point out a lawyer for zapata told me that they will litigate this in the courtroom, not the media. >> what was the reaction

most of it's in milwaukee.waukee county here -- just 82 -- 82% is a lot but there's some vote remaining in milwaukee and mandela barnes has a very big lead here of more than 230,000 votes so we need to wait and see the rest of the vote to see how much maybe the milwaukee vote will help him chip away at the overall state wide margin. 31,000 it's a lot, would be a tall order for him there. i can show you some of the other states that still haven't been projected yet. you were talking about nevada there. adam laxalt right now with a 22,000 vote lead over catherine cortez masto. what's going to matter is clark county, 84% reporting, all the election day vote has been reported, all that's left is mail, but there could be a lot of mail. a lot of mail. it only has to be postmarked until election day as we just reported. counted until saturday. we don't know how much mail there will be to count. will it be enough for her to make up this gap that she has with masto there? in arizona 68% reporting there. maricopa county
