confident in its security plans for the republican national convention here in milwaukee in the wake of saturday's assassination attempt on former president trump and the city's mayor. all so speaking out, facing questions about that as well, cnn's ryan young is here in milwaukee with me tracking all of this for us, ryan, you've been really looking at the security measures that are in place. they're very visible in many respects, but we also heard from the mayor ahead of today's opening of the of the convention, what did he say? >> yeah, absolutely. we've been tracking this for over five months when it comes to security that have been setting up in the city, the mayor feels really confident about the plans they have in place. they say they've been working this plan for some 18 months and some of the plans that you can really see just right when you're just coming down the road here, this bridge has been shut down this is part of the heart of barriers that they've put up. but also the waterways around here, the milwaukee river has been shut down. so you see the coast guard and their officers moving up and down this way. the reason why they made this cutoff is

the vice president will be in milwaukee this morning. the city just hosted the republican national convention last week. there, delegates officially named donald trump as its candidate for the republican party, with senator jd vance from ohio joining him. it's also one of a handful of swing states experts say are necessary to win the presidential election nationwide. we now know harris has secured enough delegates for the democratic party's nomination, but officially selecting her as the nominee won't happen until the convention next month. political science experts predict harris's messaging will be focused on comparing her time as a prosecutor to donald trump's recent felony convictions. she alluded to that during a campaign speech to supporters in delaware. >> donald trump wants to take our country backward to a time before many of our fellow americans had full freedoms and rights, but we believe in a brighter future that makes room for all americans. we believe in a future where every person has the opportunity not just to get by, but to get
