in minneapolis. this is the fifth largest snowfall ever recorded. we'll begin in minneapolis. that monster storm that's hitting a huge swath of the country. even for cities that are used to snow, this is a bad one. chikage windler from our twin city affiliate is out braving the conditions for us this morning. good morning, chikage. >> good morning, bianna. we're here in downtown minneapolis. the mall is virtually deserted that is after leaving a swath of 1 to 2 feet of snow in the twin cities and the north dakota to northern iowa six inches plus officially at minneapolis/st. paul international just over 17 inches, that's the fifth biggest storm in history here and the most since 1991. a wallop of a snowstorm tore through the midwest. with up to 2 feet of snow and winds up to 50 miles per hour. the storm is affecting 1,500 miles from the plains to the great lakes and the midwest all the way to the gulf. >> it is frustrating. i think i went through three different airlines. >> reporter: the storm created travel chaos. three airports were forced to close and roads were forced to

minus 14 in minneapolis. where the temperature is the least of their worries. they don't scare easily in winter in minnesota, in part because they get to watch their vikings indoors. that is until yesterday. this was down right scary. 17 inches of snowfall, just too much for the inflatable roof at the metrodome. the roof gave way. snow on the field. the game was moved to detroit tonight, and that's just part of the story in this blast of weather that has crushed some records going back 100 years. our own kevin tibbles starts us off tonight at the former dome in minneapolis. kevin, good evening. >> reporter: brian, this darkened hulk of a building behind me here was supposed to be teaming with football fans tonight. instead, weather woes even in minnesota. the big digout after the big whiteout. >> we're kind of stuck inside yesterday, and we refused to be stuck today. >> reporter: 17 inches of snow in minneapolis, the city scrambled to find places to put it. motorists struggled to pry their cars out of it. >> just digging people out, get home, watch football. >>

so when you talk about 17 inches in minneapolis, that's a huge deal.oing to go down at least as honorable mention in the record books. here it is of the cold air driving down to the south. plenty of snow driving down to the south, as well. flurries flying last night and this morning in atlanta. that'll get the kids going crazy for sure. nashville, substantial stuff, up through knoxville, as well. and not a whole lot of moisture. but biggest amounts of moisture are fed by the great lakes, huron, erie, michigan, seeing a little bit of snow. and winter storm warnings up for cleveland right now. winds gusting at 40 miles an hour. and if it's snowing, you could see 1 to 2 feet of snow in that area. it's not cold right now in new york. current temperature's 43 degrees. but the cold air will come in, but the snow will pretty much stay out towards the west and the great lakes. that's where the heaviest amounts of snow are concerned. what does it feel like? if you're wearing a thong right now and nothing else, feels like 6 degrees in atlanta. you enter in the w
