this is not it, just an area of snow in minnesota and iowa, a little bit of disturbed air, cold air pushing south, arctic air i should say minneapolis two below, chicago at single digits, when you factor the wind chill 10, 20° below zero. the cold air will be in place for the next storm. this area of low pressure is up over eastern canada. this one causes a problem. brings a lot of moisture up into that cold air. now it will move east, an area of low pressure develops along this front here which slows everything down, keeps it in place and just puts a lot of moisture into the cold air which is trapped in place to the north side of that front. that's where you get the steady snow. this will be thursday and friday. looks like it's north of new york mainly through new england western new york and just northern pennsylvania seeing that snow. to the south not a lot of moisture is making it into the mid atlantic, but it could be rain with the temperatures a little bit warmer. another shot of cold arctic air, this looks like the repeat but this is the forecasted plan thursday and friday. another arctic blast moving in. this area will certainly move east but

duluth, minnesota, saw their longest cold stretch in december since 1972. and chicago's negative 6 degree day on december 10th ranks as the coldest day in the windy city since the '70s. why all the frigid wintry weather cycles? the jet stream or river of air that acts as of dividing line between warm and cold air is farther south, meaning spilling colder air into the parts of the u.s. this month, leaving millions to feel the effects of the big chill. let's talk about how much snow we're expecting across the country today. anywhere from 2 to 4 inches, anywhere for boston, new york city. places farther north, especially you talk about portland, maine, you could see way higher amounts. let's track this guy, i think we know by now, morning commute, we're seeing this, over the early birds. the snow is falling, heavier snow expected to fall as we continue through the morning hours, especially in the afternoon. new england you'll be looking for a lot of the snow and that low form is really off the coast tonight into tomorrow. where that form is makes a different whether or not

minnesota. temperatures are expected to plunge well below normal. our chicago station wbbm meteorologist is tracking the storm. >> thanks a lot, charlie and norah. talking about a major storm system plowing through the western half of the country today from montana to bismarck rapid city down to denver into salt lake city. we have winter storm watches, warnings, and advisories. talking about very heavy snow in eastern parts of montana, all the way through to parts of the upper peninsula of michigan especially heavy in colorado and in utah where totals could be as much as in places in the central rockies 2 feet perhaps. so we're talking about a wide swath of very heavy snowfall from this. and as the system exits, very cold air will move in from northern canada bringing temperatures anywhere from 20 to 30 degrees below the norm. this will be the coldest air of the season so far while it starts in the northern areas of the country, it's slow going to trickle east throughout course of the day. >> this morning, new video may shed light on the car crash that killed a

minnesota is making its way east this morning. much of the nation faces a mixture of rain, snow, and ice. parts of the south could see tornadoes, meteorologist megan glaros of our chicago station wbbm is tracking it all. >> norah and charlie, looking at storms that will travel through the eastern parts of the country. it will be a very busy weekend for many. we see freezing rain in parts of chicago but by tomorrow it's flooding rain for parts of the ohio valley and heavy snow potentially from missouri to iowa, wisconsin, and stretching up into canada. but it could be an ice situation for those of you up in upper new england. what i see is there is the potential for severe weather down to the southern states, the deep south, anywhere from tennessee could see strong winds and tornadoes in the red shaded area, but the northern extent of the storm system could bring anything from flooding rains to ice accumulation to very heavy snowfall. could be as much as 6 to 12 inches of snowfall just north and west of chicago while at the same time on sunday looking at record warmth from d.c. to new york where temperatures could be in the 60s and 70s. charlie? norah? >> all right, meg
