mireya villarreal reports from palm springs, where the bus driver was among the dead. emergency responders dug through the mangled wreckage left behind sunday. the impact was so violent the bus... which was carrying 44 people... jammed 15 feet into the trailer. :12-:16 (sot: jim abele/california highway patrol) i don't know what the speeds are. what i will tell you is that the bus was traveling significantly faster than the tractor trailer that it struck from behind. (track) seated at the front of the bus. :23-:25 (sot press conference: dr. richard townsend/desert regional medical center) "it seems as if most of the victims were unrestrained and therefore flown through the air." (passenger) i hit all the seats. i got my jaw out of place. (track) the driver of the big rig survived with minor injuries. this cell phone interview was shot by a taxi driver who says he picked him up from the hospital. mireya villarreal has the latest. mireya? >> reporter: elaine, highway patrol officers responding to this accident say it is one of the worst they have ever responded to. killed in the accident including the bus driver. 30 more were taken to local area hospitals. the video from this morning shows you just how bad this accident was. the the entire front half of the bus was lodged under the tractor trailer. there were 44 people on that bus when it hit. emergency crews had a difficult time reaching some of the worst victims and a private tow company had to pry the tractor trailer off the tour bus to get the the tour bus was on its way back to los angeles from the the red earth casino in imperial county, california. the the bus was operated by u.s.a. holiday, an la based tour company. the california highway patrol confirms the bus was inspected in 2014, 2015 and april of this year and no major issues were indicated. the the chp investigators on scene are looking at speed and driver fatigue as possible factors in the the accident.
