lee in the 1970's. it was much more a symbolic gesture, but i thought the notion of the missing amnesty oath was interesting to point out. as i say in my book, it is not the amnesty oath of lee that went missing, it was the indictment that was lost, and that was lost for 72 years. i will mention this now -- it was lost until 1937, and then a worker for the wpa was cleaning out an office in richmond and stumbled across a box full of indictments from the judge underwood court, and that is how it was discovered after having gone missing for so long. when i was hunting for these missing documents, i came across an article in "the new york times," from 1937, and the headline was "indictment of r.e. found." that is how i discovered that it had been found. in any event, these are the two documents. this is the one that, as i said, had gone missing, and this is the one that had been at the archives the whole time. it gets a little confusing to get the details, but essentially, the amnesty oaths were sent to the state department initially and not transferred to the national archives until the 20th century. this is a
