one is a graduate of mission high school. we're in our 13th year in the school district. i'm also the chair of the community advisory committee for special education and i sit on the task force. and i'm here to talk to you today about the power of our schools as intervention. the foundation released a study a few years. it's called early warning. students not reading at grade level bit end of third grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school. for students from low income families, not reading at grade level by the end of third grade increases the rate to six times less likely to graduate. my personal story, i'd love to share with you all. my husband and i are former foster parents, we're adoptive parents and that recent high school graduate i talked about, she started measure a loma elementary school in first grade as a foster kid who was through multiple foster homes and a lot of trauma and had attachment disorder. where we got our support was actually through our school. our school social worker was the one who connected my daughter with the girl scout

writing these particular books was an important mission for me. the middle school book, "the beloved world of sonia sotomayor" was a product of my cousin who is described in the book, my cousin myriam, a bilingual education middle schoolteacher in stanford, connecticut. she's been using my adult book for lesson plans for her students for a number of years. but she kept insisting she needed a middle grade book. because the parent book, now they've two kids books, i call "my beloved world" the parent book, my parent book had too many sophisticated concepts and she wanted me to have middle school book that dealt more with the stories that children could more easily understand. and so when the publisher came to me about the middle school book, i was already primed by myriam to do that. but then they talked about a younger reader book. and i realized that that would be a book that was equally as important. because i wanted to be able to reach people, young people and older people, of all ages, and all capabilities of reading. and for those of you who are adults, i've en

mission graduates. najari attended kit bayview academy for elementary school and is now a senior in the mission. walton suggested that we focus this year on exceptional black youth in our community, we were thrilled and immediately reached out to mission graduates and other adults we know who work at john o'connell high school in the mission to tell us about which young people at o'connell stand out to them. this is when we learned about the incredible leadership of najari turner. najari's involved in an impressive number of activities, both in school and beyond. she has a number of leadership roles within the student body and is constantly working to improve the school community. she is the sports chair of the associated student body leadership team, she is an amazing emcee at nearly all of o'connell's school assemblies and rallies, and she plays on the basketball team. in addition, najari is a proud member of both the latinx club and black student union and also the president of the yearbook team. outside of school, she somehow finds time to work at the exploratorium, where she's not only lear

and that is why we're here at mission high school. now, this development was proposed back in 2013. but the developer maximus real estate partners have faced very tough opposition from some in the community. the proposal calls for having three new buildings in the area of the 16th street b.a.r.t. plaza. this would bring 331 market value units to the area. one of the buildings would be 10 stories high, that is why it is called monster in the mission. tonight we will hear a new proposal from the developer to create affordable housing at two off site locations. they are looking to sweeten the deal. >> benefits we think outweigh all of the concerns. safety will improve, crime will go down and there is a chance to bring 650 total new units of housing to the mission with one deal. >> really we don't need more luxury housing in the mission. the community has demanded for years for affordable housing on that site and for other sites. >> reporter: so the new proposal before the planning commission is to allow the developer to build those market value units on 16th and mission. the developer

for 21 years i taught at leonard flynn in the mission elementary school district, and for the last two years i've been teaching at willie brown. today i'm here to tell you about the difference prop g has made. -- i was excited to be a founding teacher and looked forward to what the year would bring. we knew there would be challenges being a new school, having new teachers and having to support some of our most underserved students in the city. what we didn't expect was the amount of staff thattest wi le including the principal, in the first year. the second here, the same happened. i know you may have read about it in the paper. willie brown has had its ups and downs, but fortunately, we now have a principal that has been with us two years. although we've still managed to lose a significant number of teachers at the end of the year. when teachers live, it impacts student teacher connections at the end of the year -- no. some of our students from bayview-hunters point, one of our most socioeconomically challenged neighborhoods having enough instablity in their lives and deserve better.
